I’m not saying this is true, just conjecture on my part.

Does anybody else think that they trotted out JV to buy them some time?

The language he used wasn’t affirmative, it was very speculative. It made me double take.

Could be reading into it too much.

It's a calculated PR move. If they have him or not. It's a beloved former player promising an answer soon.

Damage control no doubt. USC beat us out for the coach we wanted. It's that simple and now we're scrambling.

I think this is spot on. Time enough to shake the trees loose and hope a guy falls out.

Or

Get all your ducks in a row to reveal the guy you had the whole time.

He signed an NDA. He’s not going to be anything other than speculative.

When you can write a $100 check, that’s all the time you should need at this point.

I would bet that this is *exactly* what happened.

Woodward let the rumors go wild about Riley, which risks undermining excitement in his ultimate hire. Those rumors were starting to drift into his competence and the competence of the search.

If the 24/7 reports of some of the BOS meeting today is true, it may have been a bit of a "you don't have to tell anyone who, but calm people down, please" conversation.

I was actually surprised the Riley rumors went unchecked for so long, unless Woodward was totally blindsided (which seems unlikely from piecing stuff together).

This is fair. But, is TAF going to sue or fire him if he used more affirmative words?

Not likely.

Yes.

TAF doesn't need Justin Vincent.

Or you better get your shite together and don't even consider someone like Stoops with the money you're offering.

Remains to be seen. It's definitely a PR move, but I think whoever gets hired will make it obvious if it's a damage control PR with a behind the scenes scramble or a damage control because things went according to plan but the bleeding needs to stop.

And yes, Jimbo would be a bleeding needs to stop hire. All of you who think it'd be bad are nuts. He may not be the sexiest whale, but he's still a whale.

You bet they would. TAF is headed up by guys with true “frick you” money and power. JV is a former player which grants him limited access and status. Not power.

Here is the problem…

There aren’t very many names left that will make people as excited as Lincoln Riley.

The rumors set the bar pretty high for the fanbase. That’s why Woody should have squashed them much earlier and used other names as a smokescreen. Always better to keep the bar low and over deliver.

He also used Lincoln Riley’s name to raise money for whoever this hire is going to be.. it was a bold strategy, Cotton.
