Sure, "maybe" he would be great.

You could say that about virtually anyone.

But it looks like a complete reach and compromise.

I know...there are supposedly more interviews per Verge, etc.

God I hope so.

Season ticket holders deserve much more than a rationalized reach.

Pro teams do this all the time. If it doesn’t work he will move on probably along with those who put the stamp on it.

Tell me what you know about evaluating a DC candidate?

I'm not being snarky. I just know that I have ZERO qualification for selecting one. So, I will wait for whoever it is and cheer like hell for him to succeed.

I honestly do not know..but, I suspect that the people deciding this have an idea. So, I will wait and see.

Start naming names.

You’re all just upset because you know nothing about the guy.

Normally, if they were looking at someone with a history of being terrible, I’d agree with you, but the majority of these threads bashing the hell out of the guy are started by people that know zero about him. By posters that will use his work with the Vikings and Bengals as a reason not to hire him.

No pros, only cons are considered around here.

I agree with you 100%, but that's not how the rant works. Someone throws out a name and says how great he is then everyone else jumps on the bandwagon. They don't really know anything about the hire except that it's an "exciting" and "hot" name. Remember when everyone fawned over Larry Fedora? Remember when baws faped over the Dameyune Craig hire? Jones isn't a name they've heatd people fawn over therefore he must not be "good enough".

No, it actually shows they are digging a little deeper now that the top two were unavailable.

Desperation was hiring Pelini that way that they did last year. This move has more thought behind it.

I think it screams more of a lack of plan and consensus about which direction LSU wants to go. Particularly Orgeron.

Freeman was the "hot" name. By all accounts LSU tried to get him and thought they had...until he decided to go to ND. Tough. But, no matter what people say, you can't force a guy to do anything. Particularly a guy who had plenty of good options. Him being the target made sense.

O then moved on to Nielsen. No, he wasn't the hot name. But he had college football experience. Was the coach of one of the better defensive units in the NFL. And had a significant history with Orgeron. LSU waited because they thought they had essentially their "fallback" option after Freeman. But apparently the parties didn't confirm it was contractually possible for Nielsen to come to LSU and Payton did what he had to do to keep him on staff in NOLA.

It appears LSU's "list" consisted essentially of two names. They thought they were going to get option A but felt if that didn't work out they had option B ready to go. Now, it seems like they don't know what the frick to do? It seems like on the one hand they want a minority coach that can "reach the players" (something Pelini clearly couldn't do last season) but don't really have a target of who that guy may be. So, going back to the only thing at which he has expertise, O looked for guys who he thinks can recruit LA. Jones has history with LA HS football so he fits the bill even though he doesn't have much of a track record of success as a DC.

IMO, Orgeron just lives in the macro environment. He wants a "great defense", but doesn't quite have a deep understanding of what it takes to be a great defense and what certain coaches can do with the personnel LSU has. So he doesn't quite know what exactly he is looking for and basically has been relegated to calling his assistants from the 2019 season and saying "Hey. Who can do what you did for me that season?" without any real regard for the fact the personnel from that season has changed

He was a coach when I was in high school. I can’t imagine him having many connections.

Reminder that O interviewed Arnett as well and didn’t jump to make the hire. I’m not convinced he’s in desperation mode just yet.

Well after Canada and Pellini, I would not trust O in the hiring process.

One of the cons of not hiring the hottest name is that you might get to keep that guy for a few years...something that’s rare.

Your post screams of total stupidity and having not one once of football acumen. What do you know about this guy Jones? Have you intervuewed him? Have you talked to people who has worked with him? I have read about this guy and you can't help feel like he is a very focused intelligent driven guy. You can tell he would be respected by the players and be one dynamic recruiter.

Desperation my arse I hope we hire him and hope you go away and root for Tulane and stay away from us.

Yep. I agree.

The guy could be great, but he’s a reach.

Why? Because I can read a resume. There are other candidates coaching college ball who have better resumes who are running defenses right now or are position coaches on excellent defenses. Not ten years ago.

LSU can do better.

True, Ed O hired Canada, but that's not who he wanted to hire. That is who Joe Alleva told him to go hire after Lane Kiffin took the Florida Atlantic job. As Ed O always wanted to go to the spread since the very get go.
