Notre Dame fired him. What’s up with the love affair with this dude?

He’s still considered one of the top Oline coaches in college.

Just read a interesting thread on the ND 247 site. The overwhelming consensus is that as an analyst this is a homerun hire for us. There definitely appears to be some difference of opinion on how good of an actual OL coach he was.

A reasonable person would conclude that if Brad Davis does a good job with the O-Line during the transition, he isn't going to be fired.

I'm not suggesting otherwise.

What if he has a year similar to this year? Or, what if he has a good year and someone tries to poach him. He might move on with someone looking over his shoulder.

Isn't Davis the only hold over from Orgeron's staff? If Kelly was going to keep a coach on for transition purposes, it's not going to be a guy like Brad Davis that hasn't even been here a calendar year.

I'm not following your logic. I think that's exactly who he would want to keep. He doesn't want anyone loyal to Orgeron for sure.

Davis was viewed as a good recruiter. He has credentials as a good coach. And, he was tapped as the Interim head coach. He's obviously the transition guy if there was one.

Kelly is not going to slide his buddy into this position unless Davis does not live up to his billing. He's giving Davis an opportunity to show he can coach up an oline. He'll be fine. If he doesn't, we have a good fallback option right? This is a homerun staff.

You are getting downvoted, but you probably are not wrong. Davis is a solid coach and I'm happy he's being retained. But I'm sure he was retained in part b/c he had the shortest ties to Orgeron and b/c it seemed Quinn wouldn't be available. Quinn has been a coach for something like 26 years and 21 of them have been with CBK. Had ND not been in the running for the CFP, things would have likely played out differently b/c a few of the ND coaches (including Quinn) would have come to LSU.

This is a smart move to have Quinn already on staff. Davis is outstanding, but I would expect a mid-major to come at him with a HC job before too much longer. Good to have the next guy already in town.

Davis strikes me as the type of guy that will be at LSU as long as any head coach will have him.

Coach Davis is making north of 800k. To poach means you offered a a coordinator role and quite frankly i'm not seeing that anytime soon. He's also a BR native so it'll take a lot to poach for same position.

Aside from the interim thing none of that has anything to do with transition. Davis would be here regardless of his place as a coach during the bowl prep, and it has nothing to do with transition. He will be here for a while.

I see your concern. My opinion is having Quinn is helping Kelly coach his coaches. He knows how to implement and emphasize the details as to how Quinn likes things done.
I see it as a resource for Davis to help with the learning curve of what Kelly expects from his coaches to teach to the players.

Just looked at his coaching history. He's had 22 years experience as an OC at Grand Valley St, Central Michigan and Cincy (also the OL coach for each). He was the HC at Buffalo for 5 years. OL coach for ND for 4 years.

That's a lot of experience.

If either of those things happen then it’ll be nice to have his replacement already in house.

Look I hope Davis turns the Oline around and he’s around for the next 10 years but you can’t avoid hiring good coaches/analysts because you’re worried an assistant might not like someone “looking over his shoulder”. The more smart people in the room the better.

Yep. Coaching OL in his home town. He won't leave for another OL job unless he's told he's gone. I can see him leaving for a HC gig though.

Not at all. Most of the big college jobs have already been filled and Quinn is left without a chair near the end of the music. It’s just as likely Kelly is helping out a friend for a year and he will move on and take an OL job next cycle. Kelly may trust him, but Davis is a young local guy and is well liked by the team and the new OL recruits. I think it’s highly unlikely he gets forced out unless he bombs next year. We didn’t see anything this season that would indicate that happening.

If a good OL job opens up late, I wouldn’t be shocked at all of Quinn ends up leaving for it.

It's not really a concern. I'm just reading the tea leaves.

Personally, I like Davis, but I don't think he's shown himself to be a "great" coach. I'm more impressed by his recruiting and for that reason, I'd like him to stay.

I don't know much about Quinn except that I read more than one opinion from Notre Dame fans that said he was average at best.

However, unlike some, none of that has anything to do with an objective read on the situation that Quinn taking an analyst position is meaningful.
