It doesn't have to be a coach who is still coaching. If he truly did strike out on Riley, it's unlikely that he could go to his second choice (if he's still available) and come to an agreement on everything in 24 hours. It might be someone still coaching, but there's no reason to believe it has to be.

ESPN reporting the USC deal came together in 12 hours.

I don’t think for a minute that’s the truth.

It’s not too far fetched to believe it could be Saban! He surely would fit the White Whale description. I personally believe it’s Aranda.

For the record, the college coaches with a remaining game next week are:

WKU - Tyson Helton
UTSA - Jeff Traylor

Oregon - Cristobal
Utah - Whittingham

Baylor - Aranda
OSU - Gundy

Utah St - Blake Anderson
SDSU - Brady Hoke

UGA - Smart
BAMA - Saban

Houston - Holgerson
Cincy - Fickell

Michigan - Harbaugh
Iowa - Ferentz

Pitt - Narduzzi
Wake - Dave Clawson

USC - interim/LR
Cal - Justin Wilcox

Kent St - Sean Lewis
N. Ill - Thomas Hammack

ULL - Napier/interim
App St - Shawn Clark

Army - Jeff Monken
Navy - Niumatalolo

Of that list, only Aranda and Saban and maybe Cristobal make sense. Possibly Gundy but would he really leave his alma mater? Fickell, but if he wins he’s likely in the playoff and we can’t wait that long.

Petersen would have already been announced.

NFL HC possibilities - Tomlin Rhule. Urban is not realistic, he might as well be Gruden as far as radioactiveness. Sean Payton I guess is equally as likely as Tomlin which is minimal. Other NFL names might include Vance Joseph (but Mickey would probably be coaching the bowl) or Doug Pederson.

When you think about the only big splash “Welcome Home” is Saban. Aranda or Rhule are the most likely who can be sold to the fan base as a splash. But we likely can’t wait around for Rhule. It’s almost gotta be Aranda.

I am basing this on the comment, "Everyone will love the hire" or something similar to that in which SW made it seem he already had his guy.
But you’re also assuming we didn’t swing and Miss on LR

Why in the frick would old arse Saban leave to come deal with our insane fanbase again? ?

Ego, He has a statue on Bama's campus. LSU has 4 NC winning coaches, but none of them have multiple championships. A few more will get him a statue here.

IF Aranda or Fickel make the playoffs, and LSU plans to sign one of them, they would have to announce it prior to the playoffs just for recruiting. The school would have to decide of they will allow the coach to coach the playoffs.
