I think the guy has done a good job at Wake Forest relative to the talent he has to work with. I believe he could handle a comfortable step up to West Virginia.

Only question about him would be recruiting.

Wake did a nice job replacing a coach like Grobe with Clawson.

Crazy thing is, is that Wake is 46th while West Va is 52nd in recruiting right now. I just believe being at a better program combined with his Carolina ties, plus keeping some current WV staff would have to produce better recruiting results.

He was the only person in college football that could hold Arian Foster under 1,000 yards his Senior year.

Some coaches are better at being head coaches than coordinators. Football is weird like that. Same situation with Steve Addazio, better HC than OC.

Agreed, but off the top of my head, I can't think of a signature win he has had.

Obviously Wake is a tough place to win, but it's still a P5 job, and I'm not sure he's done anything remarkable to move the needle for WVU or other programs right now. I could be wrong.

ETA: I'm not trying to be overly critical of Clawson; I think he's a good coach with a good track record. I just don't know if there's a bigger program that believes they need to get him at the moment.

Hence asking if he’s underrated

And I don't believe he necessarily is. Hence not having any signature wins, other than a MAC title I suppose.

I think the guy is gonna keep grinding forward slowly toward a cinderella 10 win season within the next 2-4 years. It’s gonna be a slow grind because it’s Wake but he will get a 10 win miracle season and get some looks.

What’s a signature win at wake anyway?

That wouldn't surprise me. After Clemson, the ACC is pretty much a toss up right now, so a breakthrough season could be coming sooner than later.

As it stands however, I wouldn't call him underrated.

Anything noteworthy. Maybe beating a team ranked higher than in the 20s. Maybe beating an upper-echelon program. They couldn't even hang with the worst FSU team in decades.

I just can't think of a recent instance where I saw a Wake Forest score on a random Saturday and thought, "wow, that's impressive. Clawson should land himself on some shortlists for bigger jobs now".

That was a sinking ship captained by Fulmer.

Unpopular opinion but just judging off this season I would rank the coaches in the ACC like this.

Dabo
Dino
Addazio
Clawson
Cutcliffe
Bronco
Doeren
Narduzzi
Johnson
Fuente
Richt
Fedora
Taggart
Petrino

That’s based off this season and what I’ve seen from them. That’s relative to the programs they are at, expectations, and the talent levels.

So winning games at Wake fricking Forest isn’t good enough, he has to do it with glitz?
