First off I’m very pleased with the Nielsen hire of that is the case. I’ve wanted him more than any other even more than Freeman from the beginning.

I’m just curious how exactly all this came about. Last I saw we had requested to interview Nielsen. Did we actually interview him or did we just hand him the job? Again I wanted him but I preferred him actually interview for the job, just as a formality or to catch some red flag if there was one. Sorta like the OC and PGC interviewed. Freeman still interviewed.

Maybe he did interview through Skype? Nola isn’t that far so I guess it’s possible he could have interviewed. For a guy on the Future DC short list I expected a little more wining and dining.

Super excited for the nasty DLine meeting DBU. O and Nielsen coaching DLine is incredible. Bring P Jenkins in for a week or 2. Crazy

I’m very doubtful of a formal interview.

O had known him a long time. I am sure they were talking well before today. NFL guys can't take other jobs while still coaching which is why the Michigan hire from the Ravens happened the same way. The day after they were out of the playoffs he got announced. I'm sure the majority of the leg work was done prior to that.

There’s a previous relationship between O and Nielson so he didn’t really need to have a in person interview with him. I’m sure a zoom meeting was good enough. Freeman and Arnett were outsiders to O so he wanted to meet in person and have a formal interview process.

Freeman and Arnett were smokescreens... or so it seems. Nielson was the guy all along. The Freeman and Arnett interviews were merely window dressings.

Requesting an interview is more of a formality within the league. I’m sure Ed and Ryan have each other’s numbers since they’ve had a relationship for 20 years. Agent does the leg work to get his client best deals and coach makes his choice.

I think Freeman was legit and there was mutual interest now LSU may have know Nielson was their backup plan so they didn’t offer him outrageous money.

Arnett was just to make it ok like they were at least doing something until Nielson came available and to possibly see if he may be a backup plan for if it fell through.

From what I heard Freeman was Woodwards BLM pick.
Ohas always wanted Nielson. SW is starting to piss
off the fan base.

Well Freeman is easily a better hire than Nielsen so that doesn't really make sense.

You have zero people telling you this. You're making this up. Literally everyone wanted Freeman

LSU didn't just give Ed a blank check a say "go hire who you want". I suspect there were others who had input on the search and Freeman was someone who LSU very much wanted...and thought they were going to get. I don't think he was a "smokescreen" at all.

After Freeman went to ND, Nielsen became a little more enticing to all involved. Still, there was no definite timetable on when the Saints season would end, so LSU was willing to listen to interest from other coaches. I suspect they received a LOT of calls about the job...one of those being Arnett. Thus, they did their due diligence and spoke with him. That information likely became public because Arnett's agent leaked it to generate leverage against MSU and other potential suitors. An agent's job is to make it seem like his client is in great demand. LSU likely talked with him and ultimately decided he wasn't a better candidate (in their eyes) than Nielsen and/or that Arnett was just trying to use LSU for leverage (which happens often).
