If Alleva has a brain, he will be prepared

And hopefully won't take Alleva his senses. The odds are Coach Miles stays put; however, any reasonable person would concede it's a possibility he could accept a Colorado or Michigan job, if offered. Therefore, Alleva should ALREADY be making contacts w/ prospective coaches' agents to assess interest in the LSU job, SHOULD it come open. That way, for ex., if Les bolts for Michigan the first week of January, LSU isn't left looking like a deer in the headlights, and is prepared. You don't need a stupid "coaching search hiring firm." A good athletic director already should know who the good coaches are. You put out feelers to Gruden, Cowher, Dungy, Patterson, Muschamp, Mullen, Carroll, (even Saban!), Pinkel. This can be done through the use of intermediaries, very quietly. Just to assess interest. Yeah, some of those names may sound ridiculous, and perhaps they are, but no harm in at least assessing interest. Wake up Mr. Alleva and be prepared in case your coach decides to move on.

You really think Alleva doesn't know this?

I'm sure Sexton stays in touch...

I THINK THIS IS A FANTASTIC IDEA!!

Based upon past LSU coaching hire situations, I'm not sure. In the past it seems they've been caught w/ their pants down. In the past, LSU has hired firms to do the coach search, and come up w/ such winners as Curley Hallman and Gerry DiNardo. So no, I don't know that Alleva will be prepared. I would hate to see Miles leave and Alleva scrambling to make a hire, w/ an outstanding recruiting class hanging in the balance. Timing is everything and unfortunately many times these coaching situations occur at the most inopportune time (Saban to Miami, Christmas Eve anyone?) All I'm saying, I hope Alleva is, or has, compiled a short list and is already making contacts.

As much as I've wanted to stab Miles over the last couple of years, I've grown to like the man. We just need a change at OC. He is one hell of a recruiter!
My preference would be to keep Miles - but I would understand if he wanted to go to his Alma mater and out of the hell that is Baton Rouge.
Good coaches but I don't think we can get:
Patterson - TCU is a sweet position. Why come here?
Peterson - too much sin . Also, why come here?
Petrino - just built Ark into contender
All the NFL suggestions Dungy, Cowher, Gruden - no way
Harbaugh - I'd say Michigan or NFL - that's it
Quality Possibilities:
Mullen - more incest within the SEC
Leach (HC only) - FWIW - I think Leach is going to be the next Saban.
Malzahn (HC only)
Muschamp ? not totally sold on him but it would be a great opportunity for him
it kinda' falls off after that.
Be careful of what you wish for.

Jeff's point that contingencies should at least be working is certainly valid.

OMG nobody will ever want to come here. Lets just offer Miles a big raise to keep us mediocre for decades to come!!!

3rd in your own division of your own conference every year is certainly ELITE

since we're spitballing names, what about Tubs?
Posted on 11/30/10 at 9:15 am to Prominentwon
I think Tubs is past his prime. You really have to be hungry or a Saban-like manic-depressive. I think there would be a tendency for the older guys to just phone it in.

I still like Pat Fitzgerald.
