I guess its just a matter of preference- whether to hire a young up and comer with possibly a higher ceiling but lower floor, or a safer pick with a higher floor, but maybe not the high ceiling.
Stoops has the high ceiling and also a high floor in my opinion, with his age and level of interest the only real concerns.
I will add that the big 12 in Stoops' heyday was not as charmin soft as it has been in Riley's tenure. Texas won a title, TCU, oklahoma state, and texas tech all had good runs during that time period. KState with Snyder was solid, and even Kansas with mangino had a few good seasons.
Today the big 12 is a shadow of what it used to be and falling apart at the seams. But that has nothing to do with Stoops.

Not sure what to think about Stoops. Obviously a very accomplished coach but age and desire are big ?

And I would rather hire Bear Bryant than 1/2 the candidates we know about. Bob Stoops is retired retired. He saw his dad coach himself to death at 54. People who knew Bob Stoops knew that he was going to retire within 3 years when they hired Lincoln Riley as AHC with a 3 year contract. He is not coming back. He did the XFL thing because he knew it would be a fun one off thing that would let him stay close to home and reconnect with some of his former players.

I always associate Bob Stoops as an offense-minded coach but he was Spurrier's DC at UF back in the 90s.
If he isn't the guy installing an offense who would that guy be? It seems like he always had creative, high-scoring offenses.
There are guys I'd pick over him but I wouldn't melt if he's the guy. I'd just want to make sure he could recreate his offense.

The Bob Stoops was a head coach in 2020.

And Chavis is still "coaching" by that definition. It was the reboot of an already failed football league with next to no funding and just the latest of the long and storied history of failed spring football leagues. The dude retired when he said he would retire 30 years ago and has stayed retired for 5 years now. If he had found out that he hated not coaching, he would be back in by now. He has actually found that being a media guy is way less stress and way more fun while still keeping you close to your old coworkers. "Bob Stoops is coming back and is our guy" is the most delusional thing said by every fanbase during every coaching search.

Big Game Bob lost his two biggest games of the 2003 season.
