I'd look at Grimes for OC

I haven't seen anyone mention him, but I watched way too much Baylor this year and thought that Grimes was an outstanding OC. In fact, as much as I love Aranda, I wouldn't have wanted him as HC if he didn't bring Grimes with him.

Before Baylor, Grimes did great at BYU.

I know he's not sexy like Briles or Lebby, but he's a damn good football coach from what I've seen.

No, his passing offenses are terrible!

Edit: Better than I realized. Still don’t want him that bad.

Hire Briles

What is his connection to Kelly?

Zach Wilson says hi. Plus Baylor’s QB was not extremely accurate and he utilized the strength of the offense to win games. It’s not all about big numbers.

What the hell are you talking about?

I thought this was a message board where fans can talk about the team. I didn't realize BK was reading this board and would think I was telling him what to do.

Have you chimed in on all the other OC threads yet, or were you just triggered by mine?

Terrible?

His pass offense at BYU was really good in 2020. Obviously, they weren't 2019 LSU good, but that'll likely never be replicated.

quote:

During his tenure at BYU, Grimes developed BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, who threw for a career-high 3,692 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and 3 interceptions with a passer rating of 196.4 in 2020. That season, Grimes' offense ranked 3rd nationally in scoring offense (43.5 PPG) and was the leader in yards per play (7.84).

That's a pretty damn good offense.

At Baylor this year, I thought his offense was very creative, despite a QB with somewhat limited passing skills.

I don't know Kelly's MO yet. Does he only hire guys he's got a previous connection with? I thought that was just an Orgeron thing.

What was his previous connection to Freeman?

Calm down, Kelly doesn't hire his assistants off of recommendations from Tiger Droppings like the last coach. We can discuss and not have to worry about that person actually showing up in BR anymore.

I’d take a long, hard look at Billy Gonzales

I don't think your hires in your 11 year at a school are the same as your hires as your first year at a school, especially in a new conference in unfamiliar waters.

At ND, his first OC was Charley Molnar who came with him from Cincy and his DC was Bob Diaco who also came from Cincy. After being hired at LSU he made a run at both of his coordinators from ND.

It's obvious his preference is to hire someone he already has someone a connection with.

Meh. Want pass pro spread. Not gimmicks and tricks.

Grimes is a pretty good oc.

Has a background as an o line coach and made the seamless switch to oc.

I don't think his offense is gimmicks and tricks. He finds plays that get yards and put the defense on it's heels.

Grimes should be a HC somewhere in 2022. Not really sure why a mediocre to good Group of 5 program wouldn’t snap him up.

2 years in a row of greatly improved offenses at 2 different schools. Experience coaching at top programs. Reputation as a solid recruiter.

Hire Briles
As poster above mentioned see his BYU offenses to get a better measure of Grimes as an OC.

But to add some context, I would take his passing offense at Baylor as a plus. That context being what he's done with a limited QB (Bohanon isn't bad, but he isn't great either) from a small, very small, school in AR (Earle).

I would say he's developed Bohanon fairly well. He's playing better and better, they don't overextend him, and while Bohanon does make some really bad decisions (on the field) he seems to have a good grasp on both the details and overall concepts (i.e. he appears to have been coached up within those physical limitations).

I agree, which is why I was hesitant about Aranda being the best hire. But, maybe he comes to LSU for a year or two and gets a better P5 job.

The biggest problem with Grimes being an actual legitimate candidate for the LSU job is that he's already 53 and if he's got HC aspirations, this seems like the time when he would start to explore those opportunities.

IowaCityTigerFan,

I believe that the only gig that Kendal Briles will take is a head coaching position. You won't get Briles.

I don't see gimmicks and tricks at all. I see some use of misdirection at times, but it's not like they rely on it as their offense.

He would be fine with me but who knows who the new coach wants.
