As for CEO, I think a couple things need to be done to make him non-interim. This is somewhat of a high bar, but whomever the next coach is has to be able to last 5 years at a minimum (to get past the "it's ______ players" that only seems to apply to us).

- Poll the current assistants at end of year. They are technically his peers, they should have a say (try to convince some of them to stay at same time).

- Pass eye test, every game. This is the "energy" and "attitude" thing. If it's lacking, does it recover at some point in the game. Mark of a good coach IMHO.

- Product on the field. Can split hairs on record the rest of this year, but we all agree it has to be damn good.

- Yes, his history has to be considered. Yes, if he's changed/improved/learned has to be considered. So identify, specifically, some of the negative historical mistakes and ask him if he can point to, specifically and directly, to things he did here that were corrections or responses to those mistakes. If he can do that he's indicating that he self-evaluated AND corrected.

If I was a decision maker on this, that's my approach. At least a minimum. Most of it will depend on who he is competing with the job for come Jan.

Referees, duh.

Being irritated that Coach O has support while on the job for less than two weeks is pointless. We wont know anything about his process until we get through mid Nov.

As for his future, he has a pathway to become the head coach and to not give him that opportunity could be a detriment to LSU's reputation within the coaching community especially at the position and coordinator level. To say he wouldn't warrant strong consideration with a record of 7-1 is shortsighted. Its pretty obvious that he has learned from his experiences and applied that to USC and is applying even more knowledge to his time here. Does that mean he should have the interim tag removed.. I dont know but we should wait and see while actively prodding behind the scenes for alternatives.

Not being the coach de jour around the country after his USC stint shouldnt be a determining factor either. I would imagine that Coach O smiles at their missteps after not retaining him to stabilize the program. Watching them flounder through coaches as they try to retain the magic Pete Carroll brought.
