I don't think their are schools with much more prestige than us. We are top tier level job.
its very easy that we could mess this hire up. we have done it before and joe A has done it before. We have also hit it big before.
O was a 10 dline coach. He ended up taking a job that is probably a 3 or 4 level job. He wasn't ready to be head coach. It happens fairly often that someone gets a big promotion they aren't ready for it and they fail. The key is learning from the failure and when you get the next shot doing it better. He did that at USC.
FWIW after he was fired Nutt was able to got to back to back cotton bowls off of the talent he had collected. Ole miss was loaded by the time ed left.
eta: i would venture a guess most of the programs that fail on the hire didn't take fit into account when bringing in a coach. There are some exceptions to fit with a program

They went 8-4 twice. Loaded is a big stretch.

Nutt was able to go back to back. Orrin bowls. 8-4 is loaded for a team that has never won 10 regular season games in its history

O's recruiting classes at ole miss averaged #31. Hugh freeze is averaging #17.

ole miss boosters opened up the wallets.
we also seem to be seeing more overall parity in the game the last few years vs the 05ish.
The point is O left plenty of talent at ole miss. We all know Nutt isn't some great coach and it wasn't like he was trotting out freshmen to lead his team to those records.
plus even with higher recruiting classes ole miss still can't cross the 10 win threshold in the regular season.
I don't think O should get the job off emotion or just these 2 games, I just don't think he is a hard no.
We let him coach for the job, undefeated and he gets it. 5-2 and I think he is still in the running. Im just saying we should be taking into account everything we have seen. I don't think anyone can find fault in how O has changed things or with how he wants to run things. I hope the next coach O or not is smart enough to have more mental practice in season than beating the hell out of the team.
I think one failure isn't the worst thing and he has shown he can do better as evidence by 6-2 at usc. Now if he had ole miss and say another failure some where along the way id be on the hard no train.
Im good with a ceo type coach if he can recruit, contribute some knowledge but let our highly paid staff do its job, and make changes when needed.

Ole miss when O was there had shitty facilities and boosters and fans that were not committed to the program like LSU in the 90s.
If you don't think O is one of the top 3 recruiters in CFB then you don't know recruiting. He would run circles around miles and his classes wouldnt have a bunch of TE, skill guys, and kickers. It would be loaded with OL and DL

You don't fire a coach early in the season and wait until the season end to see how the interim coach performs to evaluate him for a ft hc job. It just doesn't work that way because if a top coach is interested in the job you just can't take the risk of losing him to another school by waiting until the season end to make the decision. O's better chance now is to stay at LSU as a recruiting coordinator than as a hc.
