After last season, I'm fairly sure about 99% of the fanbase's opinion of Nutt was "meh"... or even "wtf" ... yet we signed a great class.
Freeze seems to have been recruiting pretty good at Arkansas State. Scout has their recruiting class ranked in the top of the Sun Belt, with three 3 star players when the most any other team in their conference has is 1. Whether that really means anything who knows

Nutt was a players coach and Nix could recruit. Nutt was still a big name coach somehow.
I'm not saying Freeze can't recruit, I just don't see it panning out very well with the program in it's current state.

This hire has probably been in place since Nutt was fired. They just were wanting to wait till Freeze finished his season.
