How did Riley become a potential target?

Serious question--How did Lincoln Riley make it onto our shortlist of potential candidates? Obviously, he has an impressive resume, but is there something specific about his school buyout or his past history that indicates he would/could leave OU and join the SEC West?
I was thinking about the rumored top contenders (Riley, Franklin, Tucker, Kiffin, Napier, Aranda), and it would be a significant step upwards for everyone in that list except Riley. Obviously, LSU/SEC-W would still be a step up from OU, but the school is SEC bound and already playing for national championships. Lincoln's salary is over $7 million.
Are we wishcasting Riley as a potential candidate, or is there something else to this rumor?
To be clear, this is not a question about Riley's qualifications. It's a question of how his name was chosen to be in the list. Is it just a wish list of successful-coaches-not-named-Saban?

I’m not a fan of Riley. I like him as a person but there things missing as far as a coach that can win a natty.
Don’t skim by Tulane and Kansas and call yourself a dominant coach

Absolutely
To answer your question, google Top coaches in CFB, and start going down the list and calling names. He’s probably the first one you come to that isn’t a 0% chance to LSU.
I’m obviously being facetious here, but Riley is widely regarded as a Top5 coach, so it’s only natural that fans (and probably any AD) would desire his services

Woody floated $10-12M, and Riley’s agent has interest. Whether it’s genuine to come to LSU or he wants a raise from OU is TBD.

Saban lost to UAB and ULM is he not a good coach?
Trying to beat the breaks off every opponent isn't going to happen especially now that the HC identified his starting QB was the problem and addresses it

Young and energetic. Can recruit Offense well.
I prefer Kiffin personally over the two. We know at least Kiffin is used to the SEC

$7,672,710 per USA today. LINK
LSU was willing to pay Orgeron $9 million (per USA Today) to coach and now $17 million to not coach. I'm guessing that if LSU showed up with a $12 million offer to someone like Riley... he's going to consider it. OU's budget is similar to LSU's so the question becomes whether or not OU would match LSU's money. Riley is only 38 years old. He is from Texas and played for Texas Tech. It isn't like he's an OU Alum that can't be lured away.

Someone said that LSU couldn't have a worse defense.
LSU AD said hold my beer.

He doesn’t have near the talent that he’d have at LSU.

He’s young, a good coach from a major conference, and usually has his team playing to full capacity. He can’t help that the conference doesn’t value defense like the sec does. Bring his skills woth SEC caliber defense and he’d dominate at LSU.
That’s how he became a potential target.
The reality of this LSU coaching search is this: Saban isn’t coaching for too much longer. Theoretically speaking, whoever our next coach is has to be the right guy because LSU is set to take over the conference soon.

quote:Just for lulz I Googled that. The list of names/photos across the screen were in this order:
google Top coaches in CFB
1. Saban
2. Smart
3. Dabo
4. Fisher
5. CUM
6. Franklin
7. Harbaugh
8. CEO
9. Kelley (Brian)
10. Fitzgerald
11. Whittingham
12. Patterson
13. Gundy
14. Brown
15. Day
16. Malzahn
17. Fleck
18. Fickell
19. Ferentz
20. Stoops (Mark)
21. Frost
22. Shaw
23. Bryant (Bear)
24. Stoops (Bob)
25. Sarkisian
26. Cristobal
27. Kiffin
28. Kelly
29. Herman
30. Allen (Tom)
Apparently, Bear Bryant is only the 23rd best coach out there, CUM is No. 5 even though he is in the NFL, and we just fired No. 8.
Lester Miles is on the same list around #40.

For shits and grins, where is Napier?

runs a great offense, track record of getting and developing top QBs, young and experienced running a major program, has made the CFP multiple times
On paper you can see why he is being targeted. He doesn’t have many marks against him. Part of that is right place at right time but he has made the most of it.

Riley is young and has OU in as good a position as it can be. He can also develop QB's and isn't above going to the portal to get what he needs.
Woodward's gonna offer him a ton of money. This search aint making it out of the first tier of coaches.

I love Lincoln Riley and obviously he is the #1 guy, but I hate when people say "the big 12 doesn't care about defense" when explaining why a coach doesn't have a good defense. As a HC you don't put less emphasis on defense because of the conference you are in. Especially when you are a team trying to win a national championship and know that you are going to have to play a SEC team in order to get there.
