Riley is a good coach and a good choice for LSU, but everyone seems to think that all his shortcomings at OU are simply going to disappear at LSU. I don't think that's necessarily going to happen.

Better access to talent (especially the areas on D he has trouble getting to commit) and a better program can fix a lot.

He's also only 38 years old. He's going to get even better with experience. It's not like he'll be learning on the job like the current staff. He has experience being successful already. He will just be improving on what he already is.

I'm not so sure that's valid. There's a lot of talent across the board in Texas that he has access to. There's probably more talent in Texas than anywhere else (just in sheer numbers, LA beats them in density). Sure he's got competition for that talent, but there's plenty for him to field a good defense. He simply hasn't done that, and he's had 5 years. That's not good.

So as I said, he's a good hire, but he's not a can't miss.

Defensive talent in Texas always seems to blow. His defense is getting better each year

He gets better talent here of course. How much of that is offset by a higher caliber of opponent?

The best long term option is Aranda

Really detail oriented coach makes logical decisions not emotional ones

Well we ain't getting Saban cause he's an elderly ole fart now. Lincoln Riley with a big time DC and big time talent at LSU is the closest damn thing we gonna get to a Saban, and we all want a Saban-like Dynasty. Have some damn faith.

He's not a great recruiter. We need a top-notch closer/recruiter as our head man.

The question with Riley IMO will he improve to a coach that wins a championship then plateaus like Fisher has or does he win multiple championships. Then, how long will it for him to get there? If you're paying him $12M a year you expect a return within a few years.

Agree, he's confusing Riley with Kiffin.

But everywhere recruits TX and big time defensive prospects don't choose the Big12 programs when they can go to big SEC schools or OSU/Clemson/etc

LSU has no in-state competition and we produce elite DL and DBs (the 2 positions OU has had trouble with) who are born LSU fans every year.

Riley has dynasty potential at LSU. I keep trying to tell people this.

I agree with this. I hope that SW is reaching the same conclusion, but I don't think anyone knows with any certainty as to what SW is going to do.

Man, while I somewhat agree, check out his recruiting classes. He’s not getting scrubs as far as the recruiting services are concerned. I just think he focuses all his energy on offense, and allows his d coordinator to handle everything. Which isn’t bad… if it works… but so far it really hasn’t. Although I don’t think their defense is the main problem. Their offense hasn’t had any rhythm this year.

Before or after Saban retires?

You can build a good defense in the B12. OSU is looking pretty damn good on defense. They don't pick those schools because they don't have good coordinators. No defensive players want to play for a weak defense. That's not a lack of access to players.

The flip side is that it's possible that we start to lose that good DL and DB talent to other SEC schools if Riley comes with a bad DC. That would be a disaster.

Nobody is going on a dynasty run with Saban in the picture but Riley should be able to do some amazing things with the skill position players LSU gets
