According to Dandydon, the quoted statement is Fuente's offensive philosophy. I've heard that phrase repeated in the NFL and wondered what the hell it means to people who say it.

You win by scoring, right? So if you reversed the phrase to read "Run to score and pass to win", does that suddenly become a whole different offensive philosophy that defenses need to prepare for?

Is it a clock management thing which suggests you should score points and then run the clock out? If so, a philosophy that tries to score points slowly is not one well equipped to score when points are needed to win.

Or is it just some idiot saying that sounds good and allows players something to rally around and has no true bearing on Fuente's philosophy at all? I'm going with this one.

If you can keep the other offense off the field, you'll win a lot of ball games.

I think his idea is that if you pass and score quickly your defense is going to spend a lot of time on the field. Sustained running drives will wear out the other defense.

It's a pass first offensive philosophy and you run at the end of games to run out the clock and win.

Just take a look at our offensive performance in the Cotton bowl.

Sums it up nicely imo.

We ran the ball well, dominated the LOS, controlled the clock, drew in the safeties on the play action, hit the big plays over the top.

Pass happy is one thing, but you have to run or you will LOSE!!!
Look at the Saints, Drew threw 60 times and gets yards, but if you can't run to keep your defense rested you will LOSE!!

How hard is this not to figure out?

This is what it means:

Pass to set up the run.
Score points.
Run to finish off the opponent.

It's about ball control.

You obviously dont know how it works.

Being "pass happy" is a direct result of the ability to run the ball successfully.

To be able to pass you need to bring the secondary up closer to the LOS. The only effective way to do this is to run the ball and control the LOS.
When you get the safeties to creep up to help stop the run this it opens up passing lanes in the secondary allowing the opportunity for a big pass play (ie. LSU in the Cotton).

ETA: Once you establish the run and hit them deep a couple of times then you can use short passes (as a proxy running game) to keep them guessing.

That's your philosophy you are stating. I loved the cotton bowl offense. This philosophy works vice versa. It's still ball control but with a pass first mentality. It works very well for that bitch Petrino.

One example of this is the Saints. Their run game last year was top 10 I believe and Brees had a phenomenal year. This year, they were bottom 5...and Brees threw 22 INT's. I think it's a great quote and makes sense. Fuente would be a great addition to this team. I think he'd fit perfectly while being realistic. Chryst would be my top option but I doubt he leaves his team for the same position...he'd possibly leave for a HC position IMO.

No it's not. Im explaining the philosophy "pass to score and run to win"

Just because the word pass shows up first in the philosophy doesnt mean its pass first.

Wrong. Petrino has used this EXACT quote several times this season. I heard broadcasters use this quote in at least two games this year when talking about his philosophy. They weren't giving their opinion, either. They were relating how he describes his offensive philosophy.

If you don't believe me, look at how many times Arky passed in the first two and a half quarters. What did they do to close out the game? Davis ran it down our throat three drives in a row. Just go watch the tape.

When executed properly, this is just as good of an offensive philosophy as running to set up the pass.
