Fresno has been on a pretty serious downhill spiral

I remember him being offered big time jobs and turning them down. It is tough for smaller schools to consistently win at the highest level.
Small school coaches need to ride that wave and move on to the next wave as soon as it comes.

First thing I thought of. The front page ESPN link to the article on Hill's firing is titled "Tide Turns"...

Early to mid 2000s Fresno was often a popular pick to crash the BCS on a yearly basis. It never happened. Must have finally caught up to him when you consider Boise, TCU, and Utah all going twice and Hawai'i once. They are probably thinking their program is bigger than it actually is, but I can't blame them for wanting to take the next step. Getting blown out by Boise every year when you are supposed to be one of their conference "rivals" has to suck.

they were never, ever that good. i always laughed at that. they had one game playing out of their minds against 2005 USC and that's about it
BSU was dominating their conference during that time period

Fresno's problem was they scheduled too many big OOC games. Whereas Boise was scheduling one, maybe two.. and that has been working out well for them (for the most part).

kind of, but it would help their argument if they won the WAC a few times in his tenure

true. but i'm sure it had to be rough trying to get the team up for 3 big OOC games every year thus making a name for themselves without getting embarrassed, and then trying to get them up for the grind of trying to win a conference.

FSU was never really that good. they just got hype after the 2005 USC game and their "anyone, anywhere, anytime" mantra. they got the shite kicked out of them in most of those games and never took a big step within their own conference

Pat Hill only won the WAC once
