He won at Ole Miss at a level they had not seen in a while. He then made Liberty a perpetual 8 win program. Yes, Ole Miss was in the mud recruiting when he was there. But I'd bet if you ask any Auburn fans if getting in the mud means they will consistently beat Alabama they would be happy to take that trade off. And now, with the prevalence of NIL, he can recruit "above board".
The question with any coaching search is who is the best guy AVAILABLE and willing to take the job. Not who is the best coach overall. Saban wasn't leaving Alabama for Auburn. Smart wasn't going to Auburn. It doesn't seem like any "big names" were interested in leaving their current job for Auburn. So yes, maybe Auburn could have gotten a guy like a Luke Fickell given that he just left for Wisconsin. But Fickell would still be an unknown in the SEC whereas Freeze has proven he can win there.
Auburn previously hired a former successful SEC coach who had to leave his prior SEC school in disgrace, Bruce Pearl. I don't think AU fans are all that upset about the hire today.

Well, I suspect a booster angry at the HC for banging his wife carries a lot more clout than in a scenario where the HC was banging profession hookers.

-lack of control of the program itself (including boosters)
-inability to let things go
-taking to Twitter to pick fights with things as big as the NCAA and as small as the troll in his mentions
-always having to be the smartest guy in the room
-call girls and massage parlors
I don’t think he’s learned from any of these mistakes which could nuke him at auburn.

Look at the roster he went 5-7 with his last year and you might retract that statement. The wheels had all but fallen off. He was lucky he didn’t have to stick around to coach the abomination of a defense he left us with when Matt Luke took over. Offense was loaded and the defense was built to give up 500+ a game.
