Fired Coaches should not get a free ride..........

When a University fires a Coach and then pays him for a number of years, he should be required to stay at that University and do some other job. They should be required to EARN the money and not just get a free salary. It would not have to be attached to the sport, but they could teach or something to earn this money.
Nolan Richardson got $40,000 a month for several years after leaving Arkansas. Why? He and other coaches should be required to stay and work for that money. Why should Ole Miss pay Coach O $200,000 a year and him not do nothing?
Players that leave early to the NFL or NBA and not stay and graduate should be required to pay back their scholarship.

why? they got schooling for those 1,2,or 3 years and the school got the athlete to make millions of dollars for them. it would be impossible to recruit if a school did this. those guys went to school to prepare them for a career and they happened to be ready early. if someone went to an engineering sophomore and said hey, we'll give you 200K a year right now, tha sudent would do it.

I'm sure this trend will change because of your riveting post

That's one of the more dumb posts ever posted on this website. Care to explain? This should be interesting. Being old school is cool but being old school for no rhyme or reason is unintelligent.

I liken it to a divorce settlement. Sometimes you do questionable things and pay out the nose just to move on to something else in life that you hope will be better than what you had.
I agree whole heartedly with this statement. I have been saying the same thing for years. To add to that, I think the money should be paid back to academics to help some kid get their diploma. College athletics is nothing but a free training program for the pros.
If you and I have to pay to send our kids to kindergarten, then so should the pros.

what about a regular student who is on scholarship and fails all of his classes?

until you've walked in some of these guys shoes, you should judge. like everyone saying bass should have stayed. yeah it may have helped in the long run but apparently he needed the money ASAP. his aunt was raising his other siblings because his mom had died, they were poor...

IMO, to make a fair comparison in your case, the student on an academic scholly would have to pass up his senior year to take a job. I don't really thinks that happens but maybe once in a blue moon. Athletes can lose their scholarship if they don't produce on the field eventhough that rarely happens. A student loses everything, they don't just go down on the depth chart.

i pray that LSU would never implement this rule. our athletic program would go down the tube.

I agree. I don't think the athlete should be caught up in the "payback" thing but the one who wants the merchandise should have to pay for it. Just because someone knocks on my door wanting my truck, he's not getting it for nothing, he's gonna have to pay for it. If it's been a good investment for me I want something in return.

Sorry, but if you owned a company, you'd know that once the decision has been made to let one go, it is time for them to go.
Having a disatisfied individual around is not good business.

It is called a contract. The contract spells out the compensation and the payments made in the event of termination.
First, if any of these coaches should go back to work the money paid them by the school is normally reduced by what they are making. If the contract does not provide for that you need a new lawyer.
Second, why would a school reassign a coach? Most of these guys do not have the academic requirements to teach. And would you really want someone you just fired working in the administration? Coach Richardson sued Arkansas. I cannot imagine that a good working relationship would have existed.
I think your problem with coaches would be solved by schools writing tighter buyouts for coaches and then enforcing them.
Students should not be required to pay back scholarships. That is absurd. First, scholarships are probably the smallest part of the academic budget. Second, most scholarships can be revoked by the school (Spurrier did this at S.C. recently, I believe). It is a 2 way street and both the school and the student know it.

I happen to agree that schools should be required to emphasize academics more. I think they should be required to get a degree or pay back the scholarship.
If they are just using college as prep for pros then they should not get a free ride. If they are going to the pros they can afford to return the scholarship money. IF they are not going pro they NEED the degree.
And if all schools were required to do it, it should not affect recruiting - except to keep some of the thugs out of the system to begin with.
I, for one, would love to see college athletics be played by student athletes, with the coddled street thugs left out of the mix.
