Arnett’s buyout was discussed on this very board as a reason he likely would not be a candidate a week before he ever interviewed.

He’s a public employee. His buyout is in the public record. To even suggest it was not known is moronic.

There’s no “clause” in Nielsen’s contract. He was under contract and despite letting multiple coaches out of their contracts for NFL vacancies, the Saints chose not to do the same for a college opening.

The courtesy call stuff is just nonsense.

There’s plenty of legitimate things to criticize Orgeron for without making stuff up.

They had a verbal aggrement.

Why would he lie to lsu just to get this "shitty title", as you say, and a little more money

He would be making more at lsu for sure

You should advise Saints sports reporters then

Like you? Having an ax to grind and a great opportunity to go on a self-congratulatory melt spree isn’t the same thing as perspective.

I’m sure you believe this was all a setup and Nielsen was just out for a promotion with the Saints because that fits your “perspective,” which you have made abundantly clear. I’ll believe the media sources who aren’t tied to LSU who reported a verbal agreement and plenty of mutual interest before the contract roadblocks appeared. Do you really believe that the NFL Network was doing O’s bidding yesterday? If so, you’re giving him a lot more credit than I do.

So it’s your stance that the contract of a public employee was a secret?

It’s insane how far your head is up your arse. It’s a classic carrot and stick game the Saints played and they won. They gave Nielsen enough for him not to be disgruntled, especially considering a defensive staff member was hired away today and another is interviewing elsewhere. The raise and title he got today may be window dressing, but there’s no doubt that he’s been told he’s the DC if Allen leaves. I’m sure that smoothed things over pretty well, and that’s news that wasn’t out there yesterday when everything was shaking out with LSU.

You still completely dismiss the stick, though. There were enough reports from media that O and DP wouldn’t have been leaking to (or wouldn’t have cared if they had tried) that said a deal was imminent and a verbal agreement was in place to know something stopped it. However forceful they were about it, the Saints did enough to prevent a deal that would have normally been consummated from going forward. They didn’t have to “hold him hostage” to do that. All they had to do was say they wouldn’t accept buyout negotiations and would make it difficult to leave to swing things in their favor.

Considering that the Saints staff and FO likely already knew one guy was already out the door and another could be, they had every reason to use whatever leverage they had. They did and it worked. If you can’t see that, then you need to take a look at your own damn glasses.

They never offered Arnett. It's smart to interview candidates. It's not a "loss" when you interview someone and decide not to offer them a job.

They could have avoided any negative reaction to not offering Arnett the job by keeping it quiet. There’s no reason this board should have known so much about him coming for what ended up being a waste of time. There wasn’t nearly as much smoke about him interviewing for Texas or Oregon.

The reports about Arnett interviewing came from the Starkville newspaper.

What are you even talking about?

This stuff is rarely kept a secret. I know every coach that Alabama is looking at. It’s like that for all schools. With few exceptions, everyone knows when someone is interviewing.

We don’t just know who’s being interviewed and possibly when. We can put together a play by play from the moment a plane touches down to the offer and beyond. Every little detail gets out there. That shouldn’t be happening from our side.

Your post below:

quote:

Arnets buyout was not known until his interview and tgat was the deterrent. Fact!

You also said it in another post:

quote:

They didn’t know of the $2M buyout, therefore didn’t offer. That’s a miss by not doing your due diligence on vetting given the time you had to do so.

This is your quote. So was it known or not known?

You’re actually claiming contract details of a public employee were not known. (And then denying it)

His buyout was public information?

He signed a new contract extension in late December and new terms weren’t made public. That’s the job of vetting

Let’s see what you posted about potential buyout

quote:

I know that a "potential" buyout gets mentioned in every thread. What I don't know, and neither do you, is if it is true. And, if it is true, what exceptions there are to the buyout?

Interesting take. No reason to believe it's not true but not sure it can be 100% confirmed. All I know is we don't have a DC regardless of how it went down and since Nielsen isn't talking there is no way to know for sure. Leaves plenty to debate but now we're in a pinch and O has his work cut out.
