Billy gomila says he’s hearing mason isn’t really a serious contender. Take that however you will/want

Nielsen might be the best DL coach on the planet honestly. What he has done if Nola is unreal.

Ok, but how does that make him a top rated DC?

You means Mason’s complete inability to scheme against the spread.... haha yeah, that’s skewed.

Isn’t it funny how great coaches always seem to have great players. I find it more curious when you see great coaching and the players playing great were previously unknown. That tends to suggest there was great coaching involved.

I agree with Coach O's philosophy about building stout DL's. Games are controlled by a tough DL. They neutralize a stout OL.
Gimme Nielsen. The Saints have become world beaters on Defense. NCAA would actually be a step down for him as there certainly will be NFL teams calling him, too.
We need to get coaching positions filled soon to erase confusion in the minds of recruits. They need to see what direction our program is going.

I love the idea of Freeman, but why Nielsen? What has he shown to be a top DC? I’m not understanding the love for this guy.

He's spent 4 years at NO so I would suspect he's got a good bit of experience or contribution to defensive game planning.

At NC ST:
quote:

From 2013-2016, he was the defensive line/recruiting coordinator/run game coordinator at North Carolina State. The 2016 season saw the Wolfpack rank eighth in the FBS in rush defense and lead the ACC, allowing just 108.6 rushing yards per game — the school's best mark since 2004. Junior defensive end Bradley Chubb recorded 22 tackles for loss, fourth in the country, while his 11 sacks were fourth in the ACC and 19th in the nation. He was named second-team All-ACC. A Broyles Award candidate in 2015/2016, given annually to college football's top assistant coach, Nielsen earned this recognition tutoring a Wolfpack defensive line that was part of a defense that ranked 29th in the FBS in opponent net yards per game. Defensive end Mike Rose was a second-team All-ACC selection after he finished second in the ACC in sacks and ninth in tackles for loss. In the 2018 NFL Draft, four linemen who Nielsen coached in Raleigh; Chubb, B.J. Hill, Justin Jones and Kentavius Street, were all selected.

That's impressive at NC St

He was a Co-DC at N. Illinois and DC at Central Conneticut so the DC experience is light, but he's a great DL/run D coach so he may like Grimes going from OL coach to OC at BYU. I think if he gets the job we need a LB coach and to let Corey coach all DBs.

Might be an easier get with the USC connections Cooach O has...himself, Coach Robinson, Coach Carroll and throw in Marcus Allen as he was around the program a fair amount last year.
Could this be a Joe Brady type hire ?

Agreed

He’s not the DC, hasnt been a DC since 2010?? .so why do you want him? What has he done to warrant being considered a top DC?

Ok, but that doesn’t warrant being a top rated DC. Not saying he will fail, but your banking on him being Brady and not Linehan.

Hasn’t been a DC or Co-DC since 2010

I’m not hating on the guy...but CEO and fans want the absolute best hired. Is that Nielsen? I don’t think so. If he’s hired, I hope he is “Brady” lol

Not gonna argue with you here but I think everyone needs to consider the impact of title ix looming over lsu's head. It may come down to needing to take a chance on a guy because guys like Freeman may not be as willing to jump ship from his friend and gig to come to lsu where he may find himself wrapped up in a bunch of ncaa violations.

He played at USC from 1999-2002 I think.

Wasn’t O his DL coach?

I don't disagree. I'd like to see more DC experience, but what I do know is the guy has a serious track record as a DL and run game coach. He's also supposed to be a good recruiter and was RC at 2 different stops. If we start pulling top DL prospects (between him and Bo Davis) and Raymond keeps getting top DBs scheme becomes a lot easier.

I get it

Would be an epic gamble on what is considered “can’t miss hire” on CEO career at LSU.
