while being a head coach and actually calling the plays on defense, this guy had a top 35 scoring defense, at Vandy, with Vandy talent, for 2 years straight. He finished top half of the SEC both years. He was #1 in scoring defense in the Pac both years at Stanford when he was the lone DC.
Not only was he playing better offenses at the time, he also last called DC plays only 4 years ago. This isn’t Pelini who hadn't did that since leaving LSU, Mason can still handle these offenses.

He got hired with a significantly weaker resume than most coordinators to be a head coach. He’s been moved up the ladder quickly less bases on his work history and more based on other factors.
His record is he took over a top 10 defense and dropped their average ranking in his tenure, although it was still good. The year after he left the Stanford defense improved to the second best in country.

The dude has been coaching for his job and instead of doing what has worked for him in calling the defense he decides not to? Come on dude.
The Saban comparison has got to stop. The dude still has good defenses that have done enough to actually win games. Can't say that about vandy the past few years.
