The good old days was nothing but Bama, Auburn, and the Florida schools represented. All the LSU, Georgia influx has been lately, relatively speaking. It's a good mix, though. Nice melting pot.

To be honest, I remember it being football-centric when I was younger, but not as SEC crazy as it is now. But of course, 30A was truly a string of small towns then, not the ridiculousness it is today.
We've always spent Thanksgiving on 30A, and it was fun the way the whole area shuts down for the Iron Bowl (or did then). The beaches would clear about 20 minutes before the game started.

Was crazy crowded this year. It was long sleeve weather and the beaches were packed. I've been coming here since the early 70s, lived here for 5 years. Love it, but it's changed drastically. The good ol days were truly better.

I didn't get down there until the early 90s (I'm turning 30), but I agree. At this rate I'm going to be an extremely grumpy old man.

If all things were completely equal, a better town might win due to a coach's family. In the real world, it's incredibly rare that all things will be equal when comparing jobs.
Exactly. He made the best point in this thread. Some people act as if Saban is living in one of the ratty neighborhoods they see when they enter Tuscaloosa before getting to campus.

Plus, people keep saying things like "Durrr Tuscaloosa sucks and Austin is awesome." Yeah, I'm sure Saban gives a frick about how great 6th Street is at night. Like I said in another post, the guy is going to spend 90 to 95 percent of his non-sleeping time either at the facility or on the recruiting trail.
This is the same guy who gives his wife like 2 days of together time a year after winning a National Championship.

Obviously from media/fans the best jobs are based on history, facilities and fertile recruiting area all of which lead to wins.
But things might be different for each individual coach. David Cuttcliff might never want or desire to be the head coach at USC. He might find his coaching style and personality are better suited at Duke.
Just because media/fans label certain schools as
"Best" coaching job in college does not always mean that every coach has a desire to be there.

Good point. It's why that unless you are a big/large city (1,000,000+ metro population) guy it doesn't matter all that much what city you coach in. I'd be just as happy making $5 million a year in any of the SEC cities because literally all of them have at least a couple high end/high roller neighborhoods with $1,000,000 and up priced homes. I haven't seen Saban's house but I've been in that neighbhorhood (Crowne Ridge) with a friend who was selling the brick on one of the neighboring houses and the houses out there are palaces. Talking 7 and 8 thousands square foot multi room, multi level houses with pools and long winding piers leading to piers/docks on Lake Tuscaloosa. Those are a dime a dozen in Austin too but the point is that those types of setups also exist in all the SEC towns.

I'm going to age myself with this post but what the heck. I actually stopped going to Destin about the time you started going (early 90s). My family had a condo at Sea Scape throughout the decade of the 80s. We started going there about 1980 or 1981 when I was barely in kindergarden and we had the place until I was in high school when my dad sold our part of the condo. The bypass wasn't even finished until about 86 or 87 and that's when the area completely blew up. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Destin but it has gotten crowded. 30-A was in its infancy as a destination about the time we quit going there regularly. Now I have family (an uncle on Soldier's Creek near Orange Beach) and an aunt on Ono Island.
The change in Destin/Sandestin/30-A from the 80s till now is mindboggling.
