He is not ready to be a HC at a major program. Let him get some experience from O in recruiting and he will be the HC in 3 years.

The reason that people always want a Coordinator to go to a smaller school first is so that they can make a few mistakes. At major programs like LSU you only get 3 years to show what you can do. It's better to spend a couple of years trying stuff out at a small school so you can learn what works and what doesn't.
This doesn't just apply to X's and O's. Being a head coach is so much more than just football. At LSU it's being the CEO of a $600MM business. There's personnel management and leadership, politics, press, boosters, and fans to deal with as well.

Great coordinators don't always make great head coaches. To assume his defenses will stay top level once he has to delegate responsibility is naive.
For example, Pelini's defenses at Nebraska were up and down. Charlie Strong's defenses at both Louisville and especially UT have been closer to bad than good overall.
The fact is that it is a risk to take a coordinator with no HC experience. You saw the opposite with Muschamp at UF. Defense was great but offense was atrocious. He focused too much on the defense and while it made them legit, the rest of the team suffered.
In the end, Head coach positions take more.
Honestly, I don't get everyone's love affair with Herman either. He's been a headcoach for two years at UH only and while his teams played well and beat some big name teams here and there, they've been mediocre this year despite having more talent than last season. Meyer proved himself at multiple places before coming to UF. Saban proved himself at multiple places before coming to LSU.
Herman could be a huge bust if LSU hires him.

A HC doesn't always make a HC either! This guy is a top 5 football brain, he understands offense as much as he does defense... so if we strike out of Herman or Fisher, why not?
