The Cincinnati defense currently ranks 13th in the country in total defense. They rank top 20 in the country in passing defense, rushing defense, and red zone defense. And 7th in the country in scoring defense and topped the AAC in scoring defense for the 3rd straight season.

The Bearcats finished atop the 2019 AAC ranks in scoring defense for the second-straight season and ranked among the league's top three in rushing and total defense.

The 2018 Bearcats Defense led the American in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense and ranked among the Top-15 in the NCAA FBS in all three categories.

Freeman has had an excellent track record and 3 straight years of producing very good defenses.

Aside from Jim Leonhard at Wisconsin there isn’t a better more proven innovative young coordinator in the entire sport.

You gotta wonder though about guys who are DCs under defensive minded coaches (Fickell). Are they good because he’s a good coach or because the HC is running the show?

The question I have with him is how involved he is in defensive gameplans for the Saints. That's easy way to know how good this guy would eventually be as a DC. If his involvement isn't significant on the X and Os for defensive gameplan then yeah, he's unknown. Shouldn't be difficult to know his potential as a DC and if LSU did take him I'll bet Payton gets all pissy about it like he always does. I don't think he likes Orgeron too much and didn't like Brady leaving either. If I remember right Payton made a comment he didn't think Orgeron was a good coach when he was there for a year coaching is line.

Nielsen's connection to O started at USC. Neilsen was a player and GA at USC while O was on staff.

O then hired him at Ole Miss; so they have a long and deep history together.

Most of his career has been spent in college. I guess the question is would he leave a skyrocketing career in the NFL (the Saints DL might be the deepest and best in the NFL right now) to return to college and the recruiting grind that comes with it?

And take a look at the offenses in the AAC, as well. There are some teams that can put up big numbers. Memphis and UCF weren’t quite as good this year, but they still have a lot of weapons. UC shut most of the conference down cold. They are legit.

Hard to argue the job Brian Flores has done at Miami though

People would be surprised to know how little BB was with the defense. Most of his work during the week was with Brady.

I like how you played that.. the AAC. A conference filled with triple option teams.

However, I the more I dove into the stats. The more I liked what I saw.

I take it back. My question is: Is Fickell the driving force or is it Freeman. Honest question.

Agreed. My biggest question is what role is going to be in?

I don't think he has ever called defenses before; so I don't see how you bring him in as DC. And there is a lot of smoke on multiple boards about Bo Davis being brought in as DL coach. And even if you hire Nielsen as DC, that still gives us no LB's coach (which you can probably create room to hire one) and essentially 3 DL coaches on staff in O, Nielsen, and Davis.

Did you ask this question about Kirby while he was at BAMA?
When BAMAs D has not been very good, is Saban the driving force?

Didn't Bo Davis get busted for recruiting violations when he resigned at Bama for his lord savior Saban? Not sure he would be a smart hire with the NCAA sniffing around our program right now. Don't know if I buy that smoke.

*edit* not saying he's a bad coach/recruiter just seems risky since he was busted once before

Yes and no. From what I've read in another post on here (I think it was Vol), the infraction was pretty minor (impermissible contact during dead period); but the issue was made larger b/c he or Bama in general didn't fully disclose to NCAA and tried to lie about it, making things worse. So to save Saban and the program, he basically fell on the sword.

I get what you are saying with our current issue; but seems as though Davis has paid his penance and been away from CFB for a while; so I don't think the NCAA would care much.

Kirby is a heck of a recruiter.

Kirby is a good, but not great coach.

He use to be an elite recruiter and he was a good coach. I'd take that risk tbh.

His defenses have faired pretty well since he's been a Georgia.

You think it’s a coincidence he eventually landed in Detroit with Belichecks boy Matt Patricia. That was Saban doing him a solid.

Yes and got hit with a show clause for lying, but that was 4 years ago. Should be fine to come back now.
