He mentioned Ryan Nielson (Saints’ defensive line coach) and Marcus Freeman (DC and linebackers coach at Cincinnati).

Ross Dellenger tweeted a photo from a camp that had Nielson listed as one of O’s former connections (maybe played for him?) at Ole Miss. Freeman seems to be a very popular name on short lists for major DC and HC positions.

Any thoughts on these two possible candidates?

I think Nielson could eventually get an NFL DC job, particularly if Allen gets a chance at an NFL HC opening this offseason.

Freeman seems more likely.

But I do think Nielson would be a homerun for anyone. What he has done with the Saints DLine is amazing.

I like Freeman a lot. Runs a 4-3 which is what we’re looking for. I know he’s really tight with Fickell. But surely he’d leave cincy for LSU.

I could get on board with Nielsen too

I like both of those names a lot. Certainly a hell of a lot better than who got mentioned last year.

I really like the potential of Freeman and that's he's currently the DC for a good defense but Nielsen has been a great coach as well.

Marcus Freeman has had good year. But, he hasn’t had the best track record...

Ryan Nielsen’s line is incredible this year. But does he have any play calling experience?

I think Freeman would be promoted to HC if someone hires Fickell away from Cincinnati.

Ryan Nielson

Hanny mentioned him in the postgame Saturday. Young guy (45) CEO connections, Wonder if he would be more of a 3-4 guy vs a 4-3.

You gotta wonder though about guys who are DCs under defensive minded coaches (Fickell). Are they good because he’s a good coach or because the HC is running the show?

If Bo Davis is indeed coming in as DL coach I would be more interested in Freeman. We need a guy that can coach up the LB position.

Currently coaching a 4-3 defensive line.

I doubt Nielson leaves a successful NFL career that he's skyrocketing in, to coach college kids.

I believe the Saints are his only NFL job and he's been strictly a college coach before that. He was recruiting coordinator at NC State so he must not hate that aspect too much. I think I'd prefer someone with more recent and successful coordinating experience though.

He's unquestionably an amazing DL coach but there's nothing there for DC. I wouldn't hate the pick but it's super risky any way you slice it.

Nielsen's connection to O started at USC. Neilsen was a player and GA at USC while O was on staff.

O then hired him at Ole Miss; so they have a long and deep history together.

That’s how I feel. He’s an elite DL coach but has proven nothing as a DC.

No one would ever get a chance to be a DC if they never get the chance to be a DC.

Nielsen has proven himself as an elite DL coach at the highest level. He's also done very well as a DL coach and recruiter in college, and has been a DC before, twice, albeit at a much lower level.

You interview him. If a guy like him interviews well as DC you hire him.

Fair enough, but I still think O needs to find someone more established in that role.
