They caved on $1.5-$2 million of that buyout. They agreed to play a game in Fla, and that' worth over a million these days.
In the end, they made about $5 mill from the buyout, which is more that they'd have gotten in court.

If you're a program like CSU, you don't want to be known as the type to hold your HC hostage. CSU knows where they stand in the college football landscape. They have to rely on hiring up and coming coaches. These coaches aspire to coach at big time programs. They use each other for a few years to get what they want. Young coach proves he can be a HC and CSU gets a few good years of football. If they were to not allow these coaches to move on when bigger programs come calling, then these coaches would avoid going to CSU.

We have a winner. This is it on the nose. A stepping stone program can't get the reputation of being hard to deal with.

Idk a lot about coaches contracts, so help me out here. Why is his buyout to go to another school so low, but his termination buyout is through the roof? Is Alleva that dumb or am I not understanding this? Sounds like Les makes out like a bandit no matter what. He can leave to go to another school whenever he wants with very little buyout, but LSU has to pay him 15M+ for termination?
Sounds like he has LSU hostage...

Florida will pay $3 mil while McElwain pays $2 mil
Also CSU got a $2 mil guarantee for the future game in Gainesville

CSU made out like bandits. I don't know why the coach signed such a deal to begin with. That is a very high buyout for being there for 3 years.
By demanding such a buy out CSU was guaranteed to only lose mcilwain to a major high profile program and having the salary of their next coach paid for 4-5 years

A buyout of half that amount would have been significant. I have no doubt that he was looking to bolt for the next job but he sure handcuffed himself in that regard, He was lucky it worked out.

By making it doable for the Gators they netted $7 mil.
Mid majors could begin to use coaches in the a similar vein to guarantee games. Continue to let the coach use you as a spring board, but capitalize when he jumps.

They think they are a destination job hince the buyout. Both the president and the interim AD made statements summing up that they are a destination job.
Here is my summary of the outcome:
Foley got the coach he wanted but payed more than he expected.
CSU held strong to the buyout and made McElwain and UF pay highly but discouraged young and coming coaches who want NFL or Power 5 jobs from ever looking at CSU while the current President is there.
