After extensive meetings Monday and Tuesday, the Bears are not making a head coaching change and Matt Eberflus offically is expected to return for the 2024 season, per league sources.

Yea they are gonna draft Williams and he’ll have a different head coach in his first two seasons as a starter….he should pull a Peyton Manning on the Bears and let Maye deal with that BS!!!

I'm seriously racking my brain for this: who was the last NFL coach who barely survived firing then recovered to have a nice run with that team? Bill Walsh wanted to quit in year 2 but that's different. Would love to find a counter-example but it basically always ends badly.

I think Coughlin is probably the best example but not particularly analogous to Eberflus. When Coughlin was getting heat he'd made the playoffs for two straight years!

The only way this makes sense is if they've already decided to get rid of Fields.

You don't give an inconsistent starting QB a third offense to learn in four years with the hope it works out THIS time and saves everyone's jobs.

That said, it's the Bears, so they probably think that's a great plan.

As soon as Bears traded for Sweat their defense got WAY better. I guess they think Eberflus has the D on lock and now just need an OC.

This makes me think they might keep Justin Fields. Which means they will all be out of a job in 2 years

This screams they keep Fields because it's dumb as frick to draft a QB this year to fire Eberflus next year

There's also the possibility that they saw the Saints are trying to have the dumbest off-season so they were like, "oh we can go lower!"

Being a Bears fan has really freed up my Sundays. If they want me to watch them, they need to trade back to 3 or 4, draft JD5 and either Malik or BTJ, trade Fields, and use all that capital to continue to build an actual team around their QB, unlike they've done in the past.

It cant be any worse than the plan they've come up with, and I'd have a reason to watch the NFL again.

This screams they don't to me.

They kept Eberflus (who called the defense), but fired the entire offensive staff. Evidently, they believe the offense is what's holding them back, and it needs a total reset.

Eberflus is Ryan Poles' guy. Justin Fields isn't. For better or worse, if he's riding with his guys, I think he's going to want a different QB.

Given how well their defense played to end the year I sort of get where they are coming from, but they need to make a slam dunk OC hire.
