Yet, owners, GMs, and fans always want to do it.

There are literally dozens of examples of trying to sign a washed up player, coach, GM that fail yet no one seems to learn.

The examples of it actually working are very rare. There are 100 Mike Ditka, Bill Belichick, Jon Gruden's for every Dick Vermeil.

Going after Saban would be a mistake. He won't fail as hard as some of the above if hired, but he won't bring LSU back to anything more than good.

The man is 74. It's simply impossible to have the same drive at that age. I think he'd be more like Mack Brown at UNC not Belichick.

As for the obsession with Gruden, it makes no sense at all. He won one SB with Dungy's team then was out of the league forever, came back was mediocre and now is tainted rightly or wrongly. It's not like the dude was a huge winner before he retired or after he came back.

The greatest NBA coach of all time Phil Jackson was an awful GM for the Knicks. The greatest NFL coach of all time is a trainwreck at UNC. Dumars as GM of the Pels is another example of a guy out of the league for years that has no clue how to run a modern franchise.

Former glory means nothing.

It's like being 2025 and buying stock in IBM instead of NVDA or something. Find the next guy not the old one.

Anyone mentioning Saban is simply dumb. Period.

Sitka and Gruden won 1 SB each and lots of mediocre seasons after and were fired. Belichicks glory was in the NFL, expecting him to take a 2nd tier FB program to glory while he’s busy with a women young entries be his grand daughter is asking for disaster. I could have seen him with another NFL team maybe. All 3 were fired after losing seasons.

Saban stepped away with a team in the playoffs. They lost in OT to the team that won the NC. The situations are not the same.
