He was 28-21 at Stanford and had Andrew Luck. The UM faithful are envisioning the second coming of Saban, and I'm wanting to discuss the realistic possibility that we might be doing this again in 2018.

We have a guy that has a better record than Saban at non destination jobs and a much much better record in the NFL. Harbaugh = Saban He is every bit as good of a coach, perhaps better (definitely better in the NFL)

The only realistic chance we are doing this again in 2018 is if Harbaugh leaves for the NFL again.

I think Harbaugh would be a great coach at Michigan, but this is dumb. I would take Saban over Harbaugh for college in a heartbeat as would the majority of other schools.

All signs point to a major let down

I think Hoke could have won with Andrew Luck as his QB.

The one saving grace is that BIG is garbage and showing zero signs of recovery - so it will be mostly a 2-3 game season every year

Are we talking about a post lsu / alabama saban or a pre destination job saban. If you check his record before LSU his numbers are no better than Harbaugh. I say michigan state is easier to win at than stanford and he was a 6/7 win guy there. Harbaugh had stanford to 12 and a bcs bowl in 4, in that same amount of time he was one game over .500 at michigan st. the NFL records speak for themselves and getting to the NFC championship game is every bit as difficult if not more so than winning a championship in college. Harbaugh is 12 years younger.. I dont think that decision is as easy to make as you think.

1) Recruiting
Nationally, the BIG is considered weak, winters are extremely cold, and you have to recruit against Michigan State and Ohio State, and Notre Dame will always have a draw for some kids.

It's still Michigan. Michigan recruits nationally...I believe that college kids would love to play for Harbaugh as well.

2) Urban at Ohio State
The dude is a great coach, he's got Ohio State rolling.

Very true. Urban doesn't have much competition outside of Michigan State, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Harbaugh at Michigan will change lots of things.

3) Resurgence of Michigan State.
It can't be beneficial to have your in-state rival as dominant as they have been.

Dantonio is a great coach. However, Michigan is still Michigan and Michigan State is still Michigan State. It's like when Auburn was beating Alabama 5 and 6 times in a row...it just takes one coach to change things at Michigan.

4) Recent Suckage
Current recruits were BORN in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000. These kids grew up with a view of the Michigan program from roughly 2003 to the present. A nice season here or there, but hardly the perspective of their moms and dads.

Ehh...this doesn't mean anything to me.

Harbaugh's a good coach, but his chance of success at Michigan (averaging 10+ wins a year) is less than 50/50.

He had great success at Stanford. I see no reason to expect less at Michigan.

That might have been the silliest thing I have read in regards to this thread. 20 years ago that might have been a fair statement with the teams playing 14+ games each season winning ten games is not as difficult at it used to be. I see Harbaugh getting basically a 8/9 win season on his talent recruited at michigan alone once he gets there and rolling. He will have 3-4 competitive games each season the other 8-9 are gimmes. The odds of him not winning at least half of those games is very small so I would say the odds he gets to be a 10+ win per season coach is about 85%

4 national championships > everything you just wrote as pro Jim Harbaugh

No, it really is.

I would take Saban over Harbaugh right now.

1. Recruiting will be top 10 every yr Harbaugh is there. This is Michigan u know Michigan, not practice.
2. Urban showed everyone why fight the SEC each yr. Its healthier to let them cannibalize each other while u take your 1 loss team to the playoffs each yr playing just 2-3 'tough' games a yr.
3.MSU is just renting this spot until Dantonio moves on or Um gets a good caoch.
4.Makes this opportunity one of the all time best in the field. Again See Urb "THe FRAud" Meyer.

This is Michigan, man, u know the Wolverines. Whoever gets this gig is set up for greatness. Harbaugh can win 8 games a yr there, asleep.

It depends on what you mean by success.

He'd have more success than they've had recently. But, I agree that it's no foregone conclusion that they rise to the top of the Big10. In fact, I don't think that will happen.

Exactly. It's more likely than not that JH will not produce what they are envisioning. I see his ceiling as more of a "Milesesque" tenure. Maybe one NC, two BIG championships, a couple big bowls. This is his MAX, and far from a guarantee. More than likely, he'll average 9-3 and a Florida bowl.

Why do people act as if he'll pull top classes at the snap of the finger? He had one top 25 class at Stanford.

He has coaching and playing accomplishments and experience that Saban and Meyer don't. And swag. And probably would run a pro system. Add it up.
