I get he was OC at Oregon during the Chip Kelly era, but what else has he done that is that impressive? Chip kelly called those plays, and we would have to rely on Helfrich for the play calling and all aspects of the offensive scheme since Coach O admittedly lets his coaches coach.

The Oregon offense is (was?) Fun to watch, but what has Helfrich done to prove he is a great OC besides working under Kelly?

Admittedly i haven't followed him like Kiffin and Canada. That's why i am hoping you guys see something i missed on him. Any insight is appreciated.

TIA

According to Oregon fans Helfrich was the one who actually gameplanned and put together the playbook week in and week out. He also helped call plays with Chip getting the final say so.

Knowing he was good enough to work for Chip Kelly is enough for me.

The offense also stayed consistently great after Chip left and he took over. Leading them to a national championship game appearance.

Even this year when they sucked the offense still scored a lot of points.

Why? I don't understand that logic. Granted, there offense is still better than LSU's, but it has regressed while he was HC. Before Oregon, what did he do of note?

Ultimately, has he done anything impressive outside of Chip Kelly? If not, that's a big red flag to me.

How about we ask Matt to reach out to Mariota, find out what impact Helfrich had on Mariota, and report back to us . . .

That was with Scott Frost as the OC calling the plays. Once he left, there seemed to be a drop off.

If you call going to a national championship or developing a qb into the number one pick something then yeah. Also hasn't been outside of the top 20 in total offense since Chip left.

Again, that was with Scott Frost as OC and calling the plays.

Scott Frost left at the end of last season and they are in the top 20 of total offense this season.

He also spent a bunch of time with Dirk Koetter. Coached under him at 3 different stops.

I'm not sure what your point is. My question is why would he be the best playcaller/OC overall.

I understand he worked with Mariotta, in the Kelly era. Outside of his time with Kelly, what has he done of note? That's my question. Has he been successful at most of his other stops as OC/QB coach?

So he doesn't get any credit for the offenses when Chip was the head coach but also doesn't get any credit when he was the head coach?

When he was Boise they broke offensive records. When he was at Arizona State they broke records. When he was at Oregon they broke records.

See a trend?

I get the impression that Helfrich is to Kelly what Kirby Smart was to Saban, meaning the expertise came from the top and the bottom just called the plays.

He's a bit Magoo and shouldn't be the head coach. Other than that, he's an intelligent measured coach.

Maybe...he was the QB coach at those stops right? Did he call the plays? I'm not trying to be difficult here, but i feel like no one has actually answered the question: "Outside the Kelly Era, what has he done as OC/playcaller to make him a proven/great OC?"

Really? An LSU fan in Austin,TX spends time following the career of the OC of Pittsburgh and NC State?

Everyone on this board had never heard of the guy until he hung a bunch of points on Syracuse. Based upon his history at previous schools, he's an underwhelming hire.

I try to do research on potential OCs to join lsu. Canada peaked my interest so yeah i did follow him. Not sure what your point is here. Any comments on my Helfrich question?

Where they in the top 20 in total offense because Helfrich is such a great play caller, or where they a 4-8 team playing from behind all year?
