Big Picture Woodward Thinking

Woodward to Tate:
"I've got a plan. Step one is to bring a stable, beluga coach in to get us a Natty in the next 2-3 years, so Kelly is my choice. I am going to also bring in Freeman and we can groom him to become coach in waiting. We may or may not say this now, but that's additional leverage with Kelly to allow him to bring his guys as he wishes. This gives us improved installation from the get-geaux. Then, after Kelly wins Natty #1, to retain Freeman, we'll name him Coach-in-Waiting and assistant Head Coach. We then get Natty #2. Then, when the time is right, Kelly will retire, and Freeman is the Tigers Head Coach, fully ready to roll. If we do this correct, which we will, Freeman then will be on the fastest track to becoming the first African-American CFB coach to win a Natty. Whatchasay?
Tate: "Press".

Not a bad way to look at this at all.

HCIW, freeman isn’t going to wait 8-10 years for a HC opportunity

4-6 years is most likely.

Maybe in your fascination but not in BK’s mind

"hey coach Freeman once Kelly does the relatively simple task of winning multiple NCs, we promise we'll make you HC in like 7 or so years. Sound good?"

I mean. sure I'm down with the theory but it still makes Tate seem like he's more interested in race than results.
besides has there ever been a true "HC in waiting" situation? let alone one that was installed 7-10 years ahead of time?
or you're just saying Woody kind of played to Tates inclinations to help get the guy he wanted and he doesn't really believe all the selling points himself?

Right idea, but I don’t think he does this with freeman, due to freeman probably getting a head coaching job.
Rees may be your guy.

Woodward doesn't believe. Woodward does. Don't be blinded with the 10 years. It's gonna happen sooner than that. Think the full vision getting done in 4-6 years. That is still the best/fastest/surest track for Freeman. He's young. No other school situation has anyone in the pipeline to beat that likely pace.
Otherwise, I think Woodward would love this irrespective of Tate. But think in multiple streams of strategy. This ain't post hole digging (Not that there is anything wrong with post hole digging).

No coach should cut their teeth at LSU. There have been to many “can’t miss” hires out there that have failed to take this approach. Yes, you can point to Kirby smart but for every smart, there are 5 muschsmps, strongs, Herman’s and etc.

Apparently this won't fly.
ND jumped on the idea first and named Freeman Head Coach.
