The way I see it, it's a pretty genius move by his agent.
He obviously wants to coach again. Now whether he doesn't have much interest in him from the NFL, or he's not interested in any of the openings available remains ro be seen.
So he shows interest in a college job, to show that interest in returning to coaching is legitimate.
From here, there's a couple possibilities. First one being that he is interviewed and is hired. He then coaches at UNC for a couple years until am attractive NFL job opens up.
Or, once GM's realize he's sincere an NFL team who wouldn't necessarily have gotten rid of their incumbent coach pulls the trigger to upgrade with Belicheck.
And lastly UNC hires Sumrall, the NFL continues to ignore his desire this year, but the groundwork is laid for him to take over am NFL next year.
If I were the Jets, I'd have already offered him the job. They have a decently talented roster, and Belicheck has them in the playoffs next year after a disappointing 2024 season.

At the end of the day he’s in his 70s, and he’s like 13 wins away from the NFL all time record that he’s been after for a decade now, he wants back in the real show - this is a bunch of smoke imo

OK. But I thought you guys would get on me for thinking he wouldn't take a college job. Obviously, I got that wrong as well.

I was surprised he was interested and now that he is there, it will be interesting to see how he does.

I guess even at his age, he wants the challenge of coaching college football to see how he can fare in this age of NIL and the transfer portal.
