Conflicting reports coming from the Ole Miss people. One day he leads, the next day he doesn't. Apparently the NC game is a major hiccup in the whole deal.

interesting. i would think it would be a great showcase to recruits on what kind of defense smart could bring to OM.

Yeah but if he didn't start recruiting and putting a staff together until after the BCSCG, he would basically lose a full class of recruits.

And I don't think Smart will take the Ole Miss job. Surely he isn't that desperate.

If it's true, he could pull a Pelinni (sp?) and hang around for the NC game and then go to OM.

Ole Miss is waiting on Fedora. He's first. Freeze is 2nd. Hud is 3rd. I doubt Kirby even interviews for the job.

For some reason Kirby feels like the Bama job is his once Saban leaves, so he would either a) have to be told that's not true, b) get tired of waiting, or c) get an offer he feels is too good to pass up.

Pelini wouldn't have been allowed to stick around if he was going to a SEC school.

You sure about that? I know that Fedora is the leader, but he appears to be waiting on something else (if Texas A&M announces that Sherman is staying then I bet he'll decide quickly).

I think MSU has a 30% chance of coming open so I asked a coaching contact (agent) last night if Ole Miss was going to hire Hud before State did. he told me they want Fedora and that Hud is running 3rd. I assumed Freeze was 2nd based on other conversations. I don't believe Kirby is. Who have you heard is 2nd?

From what i've heard, Smart is the leading candidate and is first on the search committee's list. Second it's probably Fedora. Someone said in another thread that he was more interested in Kansas. Which is completely insane. If the whole thing with Hud is true (Which i don't think it is) about not agreeing to a contract that would prevent him from going to another SEC West school, then I would put Freeze as our 3rd candidate. I really don't like the idea of Hugh Freeze. I'd rather have Chavis as our HC.

ETA: I believe that the search committee's list looks like this.
1) Smart
2) Fedora
3) Hud
4) Freeze

I'd be shocked if Smart took the job. I could see him interviewing (maybe) to get more $$ or more interest. I'm not trying to hate on Ole Miss. I think it is a better job than State by far and better than Kansas and some others, but I know for a fact Kirby thinks if he is still on staff at Bama when Saban leaves that the HC job is his. In order for him to leave he'd have to have that opinion changed or get a great offer.

As for Fedora, I have a buddy who is an agent. He represents several college coaches (none that are massive names, but some decent names including one that was recently let go). He told me last week that Fedora was the guy Ole Miss wanted, but they were doing due diligence first. He told me again last night that Fedora is still the guy.

Seems like you have more reliable sources than I do. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if that's what Smart was doing. I feel like if Saban retired today that he would probably be the top candidate to replace him.

Wouldn't Ole Miss fans be pissed if they hired a USM guy? I don't know why you guys hate on Freeze

At first I was against hiring Fedora because I cannot stand USM, but after thinking about it more and more, i feel like he would be a really good choice. Has connections for recruiting all over the state and some in surrounding states, and is a really good X's and O's guy.
I really can't explain why i do not like Freeze. I just get a really bad feeling about him like he would be in way over his head. Him being on O's staff really gets to me.

There was an article posted yesterday on Bama Online from Ole Miss' 247 Site that said Kirby wasnt as interested in Ole Miss as Ole Miss was interested in him.

Also said that Fedora was interested in the possibility of the Texas A&M job or perhaps even the Kansas job.

i don't see saban leaving for another 5-8 years. if a big time job comes open in that span i could see him pulling a Muschamp.

Where are they afraid he would jump to? Do they think his ties to MSU are so strong he would jump ship to go there if Mullin leaves?

If not, I don't see any of the other current SEC west schools really being interested in him. If the Bama, Auburn, LSU or Arky jobs come open in the next couple of years you would think they would go for a bigger name - unless he has really done a lights out job and had the Bears competing for trips to Atl...

I think Hud pulled is name because he is waiting on the State job. This is just speculation but it wouldn't have surprised me if Mullen called Hud and told him he was interested in the Penn St. job and he would name Hud to be his predecessor.

I really think Archie and Glennon want Smart, but they are not excited about waiting until 2 weeks til signing day to wait on him. Fedora would not be a bad hire. I wouldn't be made about Freeze if he could somehow hire Larry Porter as recruiting coordinator. Those two would recruit like it's nobody's business.

Question, was Gunter Brewer on staff at Okie St. with Fedora?

Makes no sense.

Administration is terrible. Recruiting against three of the best programs in the country right now, and that's not including Auburn.

Your rival has beat you the past three years and is throwing a ton of money around to "Own the State."

I love Kirby to death, but I think he'd be really stupid to take this.
