But we drill down on Tucker today because he possesses the traits and skills that have succeeded at LSU before.

Tucker knows the landscape. He was defensive backs coach in 2000 on Saban’s first staff at LSU after working for Saban as a graduate assistant from 1997-98. After moving on to Ohio State followed by three stops as a defensive coordinator in the NFL with the Browns, Jaguars (where he was also interim head coach in 2011) and Bears, he coached defensive backs for Saban at Alabama in 2015. Then he was defensive coordinator under Kirby Smart at Georgia from 2016-18. Colorado’s head coaching position beckoned in 2019 before he went to Michigan State in 2020.

There are serious hurdles to clear before Tucker could become LSU’s next coach. The first is timing.

Michigan State debuted Tuesday at No. 3 in the season’s initial College Football Playoff rankings. If the Spartans can somehow skate through their final four regular-season games that include Purdue, Ohio State and Penn State — plus the Big Ten championship game — and make the playoff, they’ll be playing at least until New Year’s Eve in one of the CFP semifinals. That would seem to be far too long for LSU to wait, especially with the early recruiting signing period beginning Dec. 15.

The other hurdle is the very thing that makes Tucker an appealing candidate in the first place: success. If his 8-0 record and back-to-back wins over archrival Michigan make him enticing to LSU, it’s darned sure to make Michigan State willing to add stacks of cash to his current $5.5 million salary (Tucker also reportedly has a buyout of over $19 million).

Didn’t even realize that.

I was pretty confident we weren’t hiring Tucker anyway, but that makes me certain we’re not hiring Tucker if accurate.

I don't dislike Mel Tucker. He's a good coach. I would rather have Riley or Aranda.

Again, he’s had 1 good season and has played really only one respectable team so far.

Here’s MSU’s schedule so far:
Northwestern
Youngstown St.
Miami
Nebraska
Western Kentucky
Rutgers
Indiana
Michigan

Beating those teams in 1994 would be unbelievably impressive. Beating those teams in 2021 is not impressive at all.

I’m going to say this one more time. Mel Tucker is not going to be the head coach at LSU. He isn’t ready for a job of this status.

Surely Rabalais - a professional journalist - isn’t making the same mistake about buyouts that many on this board make…(below info I pulled from another source)…

quote:

Mel Tucker's buyout if he leaves for another job is $6 million before Jan. 15, 2021, but drops to $2.5 million the next year w/ annual $500k drops from there. Buyout if he's fired is 85% of remaining contract (so ~$23m after year 1) subject to offset, paid monthly.

The fact that LSU is even talking about Tucker is concerning.

Either we're a top 5 school to coach at or we aren't. You dont pay top 5 money for a HC who's beaten

Uh...did Saban "know the landscape" before he got here....NO! We dont necessarily need someone who was or is connected to LSU

I don’t understand why people keep saying we have to have a coach in place for recruiting. It’s pretty stupid to let the coaches you really want to fall off the table essentially for timing reasons. At the end of the day, of course we and Scotty care about the incoming class, but no way Scotty goes way down his list to save one class versus adding stability for years to come.

Many people have brought up how timing will play a huge part in this. I agree it will be a variable, but it’s not very smart to make it THE variable. I just don’t think Scotty is that short sighted.

Didn’t we already have a coach that was a good recruiter? Would you rather keep the class for this year strong with a lessor coach? Or would you rather have a lessor class with a program changing coach? To me, it’s a non issue. I am confident that Scotty feels the same. I am also confident he’s not an idiot.

I am so sick of hearing about timing. Listen, money and the LSU brand speaks for itself.

I personally don’t know how to feel about Tucker. I, like most on here, want a big name. I wish the optics wouldn’t be crippling to chase Meyer, but unfortunately they just are. I really like Lincoln, but he still hasn’t figured out that you have to have a respectable defense to win in the playoffs. How has he not changed that? Has he even looked or asked for more money to go get him someone respectable? If he has, did OU essentially say no?

For fun, I was devastated when we hired O. I was absolutely certain this was a joke hire. We have to hire our next coach at the complete opposite. Now, we, anyone, Scotty have to define what that is. I’m confident that Scotty will do everything in his power to get whomever he wants. He is the ultimate salesman. He will get people to at a minimum say no. Unlike our previous AD.

I guarantee you he has at least reached out to Saban. If for no other reason than simply to tell him no. No, I don’t think any amount of money would get either he or Kirby, but the ultimate salesman, assuming he is that, will at least get people to say no!

Timing will be a variable, but it will not be a major one.

Oh, Lord, it's an Advocate article. I thought it would be a reputable sports organization, giving a well-reasoned opinion. Only to find out it's a click bait article, from the woke community.

a 6million dollar buyout, big pay raise for him, all on top of O and his staff's buyout....to net you Mel Tucker isn't quite palatable though

It would take way too much money to hire Tucker for the amount of success risk, not even considering an additional buyout. Aranda and Napier have similar success risk for significantly less money. This alone should eliminate him from consideration.

It's only $2.5 million if he leaves for another job.

There are 2 sides to the buyout clauses, people.

ETA These huge buyout numbers that everyone freaks out about are only applicable if the coach gets fired, like Les and Ed.
