He did it more than once.

Gill already had a face to face conversation with Saban in Tuscaloosa, and they had agreed to terms when they thought Miles was gone.

Saban left the Dolphins at the end of 2006. Les had just completed an 11-2 season with a Sugar Bowl victory over ND, and a final #3 ranking. Skip wasn’t letting Les go.
By the time the Miles to Michigan smoke started, Nick was already at Bama.
LSU wasn't going to let Miles go. But the Miles to Michigan smoke started in 2007. Remember Les did the impromptu press conference before the 2007 SEC title game because all the rumors were out there that he was taking the Michigan job?
Bama was still in rebuilding mode and Saban was just finishing up his first year there at 7-6. If Miles had taken the Michigan job in 2007, I think the odds were pretty solid that Saban would have come back to LSU in a heartbeat at that point in time.

If I remember right…
Carr’s people leaked the info, UM AD didn’t have the chance to interview Les, Les had to take the LSU deal as an offer from Michigan wasn’t a given
Carr is an a-hole and probably crushed Les’ dream of ever coaching there.

then. The following year is when Miles was going to Michigan. shite on anyone you want, but it was absolutely happening until the news broke. Miles didn't want to leave the team while in a title hunt. Had the news not broken and LSU been eliminated fro
This absolutely happened and I can remember Kirk Herbstriet leaking that shite to the general public. I was actually at the set for college gameday for the UM/OSU that year and he was pushing that BS hard. Obviously he has some some UM sources. At that time every UM fan wanted Les Miles to return to Ann Arbor. I think Kirk went too hard trying to get some big reaction for TV, not just from UM fans, but also OSU fans who were there.
Random, Kirk now has a son that plays QB at UM. He probably won’t ever get any meaningful snaps, but it’s kind of funny when your Dad played QB at OSU.

rich rod was the first name that popped into my head.
Most people won’t remember this, but RR was ready to take over the BAMA job the year prior. His wife had some problem with that, so it didn’t happen.

Skip has told the story on the radio as recently as last year. Why would he lie about that when it makes him look bad?

Carr might have leaked that to Kirk, but I doubt it. At the time “Michigan Man” was a huge thing for the older fans/alumni. Obviously Les would fit that that term as he played there.
I do know that Lloyd Carr despised the Rich Rod hire. Carr just kind of despised being around the program in any capacity for those 3 years. I remember watching LC get out of his car before UM’s first game with RR as the coach. He signed autographs and just looked like he didn’t want to be there, at all. Almost like he hated the place.
This was 18 years ago though. I do wonder if that’s why his grandson CJ Carr is playing for ND. A different grandson just flipped to UM.
Remember that UM/ND are pretty big rivals.
