Here is a very interesting part:

Behind them, Freeman employs a great deal of man-coverage, though he does so somewhat conservatively. Instead of pressing his defenders on the line and blanketing receivers at the snap, Freeman's DBs often give a cushion and play what's known as Banjo coverage. In this technique, the defenders read their receivers in a true man-to-man style, only looking up and communicating with one another if they cross, prompting a switch like a pick-and-roll on the basketball court. By staggering their depth against receivers in twins and trips sets, the Bearcats can avoid pick plays that use aggressive, man-coverage against itself.

Not from this article, but here’s one of my favorite fluff quotes I’ve read about Freeman
“Don’t be deceived by the Crest-approved smile, boyish charm and refusal to take himself too seriously. Marcus Freeman is no god of mercy. He is a ruthless bounty hunter. He destroys strategies, ravages intentions and tears best-laid plans into shards of confetti. He is a dragon slayer in a headset. Abandon hope, all ye offenses who enter here.”
It’s also cool to read about how much his players really like him and love playing in his defense.

I disagree. Scheme is the equalizer for weaknesses versus strengths.

Scheme does little if you face a team with better QB, better OL, better RBs or WRs than your defenders
We have possibly the most talented, although young, secondary in the country and our defense was awful. Scheme matters greatly. In fact, I'll go a step further and say that consistent defense is about scheme and coaching and turnovers is more about talented players making a play on the ball. We had the latter, the former was non-existent.

Notice how it says freeman's dbs and freeman deploys
He has a huge say in the defense
This isn't him riding luke fickell's coattails like some think

Freeman runs multiple schemes which is exactly what we need. He's the DC we need if LSU can make it happen.

Yep with today’s offenses u need to be multiple with personal, schemes and coverages. Hopefully O soon realizes this instead of forcing his 4-3 defense.

That's a strong take.
Agree on the talented Corners but partly due to scheme Safety play was a big disappointment.

Wonder if he also blitzes liberally, although somewhat infrequently.

The thing is that you never really know for sure with people like Luke Fickell. Some people are the kind of leaders that intentionally elevate and give credit to the people around them. I guess it depends on how much Freeman proved himself at Purdue.
If you're Freeman, you have to consider that you're only 34 and LSU is a risky move. Coach O would throw him under the bus at the drop of a hat. It would be a matter of LSU offering a lot of money.
If you do well at LSU though then you have a ton of options.
