I never said he didn't deserve a shot if he went 7-1 or 8-0. What I said is that he'd be further down the list than most EVEN with that record. Would I be mad that we hired O if he went for Herman, Fisher, Kelly, etc. and they all declined and O was the fall back? probably not. We gave it our best shot. Disappointed, yes.

But if we have a chance to Hire a Herman or Fisher and we say "Coach O went 8-0, he deserves the job." That would be infinitely dumb given all of the data we have.

This is a whole lot of justification. You're just setting this up so that if we end 6-6 you can say "Well we were supposed to end 6-6! O isn't so bad! He should still be the coach!"

He wins or he doesn't, there's no "supposed to lose anyway."

As a local boy and LSU grad, I really don't care about this. I don't see why it's so terribly important. I'd take the winning coach over the local boy 10 out of 10 times.

Well, first, the stadium only has so many seats right now, and it's sold out before so it really can't be packed "LIKE NEVER BEFORE!"

Secondly, so LSU only packs the house for a local boy and not for a top tier hire? You should tell all of the potential hires that so we can just rely on O.

Oh and you want to hire someone that you're not sure can make it two years? Again, solid reasoning.


As a top tier program we should not be explicitly "experimenting." (Granted, experimenting is what you do with any hire, but there's a difference between experimenting with someone on the up and up who has clear, proven success in program building, and experimenting on someone because he's a local boy and "deserves a shot.")

Even going 8-0, that tells me nothing about his ability to build a sustain a top tier program. In fact, all of his history says he CAN'T do that. And that this could be an anomaly. He failed at Ole Miss. USC didn't trust him. He wasn't offered even a mid-tier position during his year off. No one else has said "Coach O can build, sustain, and run a football program" since Ole Miss.

He can recruit and that is what you need to do to sustain a program. What he couldn't do at Ole Miss is win games. If he win an SEC championship after starting a game down, well, he can win games as a head football coach. I get being afraid of the long term implications of the hire but you can't not hire an interim that wins the SEC.

Also, if he does end up not getting the job but wins another 2 SEC games (finishing 5-3), I think a mid tier program would be crazy not to seriously consider hiring him. Winning as an interim isn't exactly the easiest job in the world and if he goes say 11-5 then he is worth being offered a head job again.
