no i'm serious. I want to know why you think you need a offensive coach vs. a defensive coach and an elite oc.

Another defensive coach isn't what's needed to fix what's been a disaster of an offense for 8 seasons. This is a fanbase that went from the steak of Montana and Young to the venison of Rattay, Hill, and Smith. Jed has a stadium to build. The change in philosophy has to be from the top. It has to be an offensive-minded HC capable of molding QBs. There is simply no other option. The fanbase simply won't tolerate another defensive guy. They want the sexy pick. They're built to dominate the West if they can just put together an average and consistent offense. They need an offensive guru that can actually take advantage of the underrated and underutilized weapons at all skill positions. Gore/Crabtree/Morgan/Davis/Walker...nightmare matchups (particularly the two TEs) that were never truly exploited to their potential under Nolan/Singletary and Smith. The team could be soooo good if it had direction on offense and a QB capable of running the show. Harbaugh offers everything a team like the Niners would want. He, along with his QB, are the missing pieces to the Niners being a GOOD team again for the first time since 2002.

But change in philosophy has to come from the top down. It can't come from a subordinate as an OC. The fanbase won't accept otherwise and the team's future can't afford it.

Rooney. No other explanation possible.

Absolutely NO WAY we hire a defensive-minded coach anyway

Nah, Mike Johnson is black, just interview him. They're considering Lewis for real IMO.

On second thought I could buy this with Lewis as DC. Who knows Baalke's plans for Manusky.

Part of Jed's master plan.

I'm a Niners fan and also think the Niners desperately need not just an offensive coach, but one who can develop a QB and bring a long term plan to build round.

In the last 6 years they've run a different offense almost every year
04: Vertical offense - Erickson
05: Complex WCO with McCarthy (how on earth he got the packers job after leading the Niners to one of statistically the worst offensive seasons ever, I have no idea)
06: Air Coryell with Turner
07: Just a huge fricking mess after Turner left
08: Martzball
09: Jimmy Raye run based offense, midseason switch to the 'Raye Gun', a shotgun based spread offense
10: Raye sacked after week 3, Mike Johnson promoted...

And when you look at the effect it's had on the offense, it's not hard to see. What system are our receivers best suited to? Who fricking knows? The starting o-line is made entirely of picks from the top 40 of the draft, they've never played particularly well together. There's no continuity at QB, Alex Smith's development is similar to that of a retarded kid in school if the teacher was a donut. Vernon Davis is the best TE in the league by a fricking mile (yes, better than Witten, Clark, Gates) and we can't get him the ball for entire games. Crabtree is a player with a river of talent and all he's doing is fricking drowning in it, he doesn't know which routes to run at times. And of course there's Frank Gore, the player who I feel most sorry for in this utter shitstorm of an organisation.

The pieces are there to be a good offense, it's just the scheme, the leadership, the gameplan that's been sorely lacking. All those players and in most games the offense actually drags the defense down with it. It's two-three years of being settled down that is desperately needed.

Harbaugh could potentially bring that. His teams just play good football, everything just looks the way it should. Even his QB has perfect form tackles ffs!

The problem with having a Marvin Lewis (for example) then having say a Josh McDaniels underneath him as his OC would be that as soon as the offense looks good someone will take him as a HC again, the thing that most set this team back over the last 5 years was losing McCarthy then Turner.

We need a guy who can build an offense who other teams can't just steal.

I really like the idea of Harbaugh to the 49ers for you 49er fans. I think he is their top guy by a mile.

Oh Jim Hostler how freaking terrible you were. Raye almost made me miss you.

This has been irking the shite out of me all year.

Excellent post, you summed things up rather nicely. Going over the offenses makes me feel incredibly bad for Alex. Guy never had a shot.

It's also looking like Mike Lombardi may actually be the GM front-runner. He and Harbaugh have a history and it's believed they'd work well together. At least that's according to PFT.

I'm hoping Harbaugh was like "Jed, listen, I'm excited about this job, but you've got to be fricking kidding me" with respect to Baalke. Honestly having him remain at VPP and not GM would be huge.

agreed. I will say I'm a huge fan of Baalke though. However, I do think bringing in a guy like Lombardi would help but I think Baalke has more than proven his worth.

I like Miles as a person and I think he is a good coach. He is paid like an elite coach, which I don't think he is. He came in with the program at an already high level. He did well his first 3 years and then has not won the SEC West (6 team division) for 3 years in a row. In fact we were 5, 3, and 2 games out of a tie for first the last 3 years. Les has won alot of games but not SEC West or SEC championships especially now that his stamp is totally on the program. Les is gonna have to prove to me that he can win a game with SEC West Championship implications again. I hope I am wrong, but time will tell. Those results you speak of the last 3 years are not those of an elite very highly paid coach.
