What do the boosters get in return for their investment in a coach? Just the joy of seeing their school do well?
Obviously the school benefits from a very successful team, but how can a person who, for example has made his wealth in oil, benefit?
You may say it's an ego play, but rarely do very wealthy people spend money just to spend it. Usually, there is something expected in return (unless we're talking charity giving)
