I am of the opinion that it is the one Cormac McCarthy book that will never be made into a movie. All of his others have been, or might be, but Blood Meridian ... no way. It would be next to impossible to translate it into a movie script/screen play.

That is, imho, a testament to the genius of not only his writing style but the entire storyline/plot of the book.

Have you read it yet? As with all of his stories, he's not for everyone.

(Updated below, six months later. Just unreal.)

It's in the works.

John Hillcoat, who directed The Road, is the director.

I just finished reading it. They wander around a lot in the desert, for a movie imo. Would like to see it on screen, along with someone playing the Judge, but not sure how the script would track, as far as character development. Why they(the characters and the group as a whole) turn bad when they do, for example.

If you get a moment, read the comments .... because I agree with a lot of them. I'll believe it when I see it.

I first read the book in the mid 80s and have read it several times since and cannot count how many times I've heard it is finally going-to-be made into a movie. Wasn't eight or nine years ago it was a done deal ... already in the production phase and then, nothing, crickets.

One of the comments that I do agree with ... It's too much book to be limited-to a movie. If they're going-to do it they need to make it into a limited series IMHO.

I think at some point it will get made.

But I don’t think it will be good. Much of the story doesn’t not translate well to the screen. And the level of violence would be hard to capture, or would make it incredibly difficult to watch.

If this was 1950, maybe. In the 21st century I don't see how any book ever written couldn't translate to a movie considering the technology available to film makers. And something like blood meridian where 90% of the book is just boring wandering around int eh west, that could easily be done. Take your pic of a hundred other movies and shows set int he american southwest.

The only thing that may be, I guess "difficult" is some of hte violence, but again that's only limited by the skill of the director. Scalping indians and dead babies in bushes aren't things that are physically or literally impossible to film.

Getting it on film is one thing.

Getting that film a rating that allows it to be shown in theaters is a completely different story.

It would be hard to get blood meridian to an R rating without damaging the story imo.

Damn - I didn't know it was that rough, even for a McCarthy book.
It came up as included in my Audible subscription, and I have until 9/12 to listen to it. It's next up for me, since I haven't read it yet.

Mel Gibson is the only living director that would do it right.

Wasn’t great but I blame that on the child actor they used for the son.

McCarthy dying right after a new adaptation was announced kind of adds to the lore of this project. His son is supposedly still gonna help produce.

Interesting.

Which brings the need to ask the next question ... who would play The Judge ... Holden?

I've literally asked this question 100 or more times in 100 different settings from FTF to forums and it has amazed me how many times Matthew McConaughey's name has immediately been first on the list.

A lot of times it's been preceeded with something like "well, since (Jack) Nicholson is too old, it would have-to-be ..."

ETA: Bonus Question .... is Judge Holden human?

I think Woody Harrelson would be better. He has the experience playing a psycho on Natural Born Killers, and could pull off the hairless look more naturally than McConaughey. Would need to find him some stilts though

Woody huh? ... interesting choice.

I actually listened-to-it a couple of years ago driving from Charleston to Devil's Lake in Michigan. An hour-in my wife was terrifed and she had her earplugs in while insistent that I turn down the stereo ....`she referred-to-it as the most hideous thing she has ever heard. Lol

For any fan who has read the book a couple of times prior ... I agree, Poe's telling is well-worth a listen.

Have a buddy who posted on FB (take that for what it's worth) that there are rumors that Derek Mears is up for it.

I always visualized someone like Ian McShane playing the part. He's pretty old now so it probably wouldn't work.

I hope not. Great book that does not easily translate to a movie. A crap movie version might result in fewer people reading an American classic.

Lo and behold .... it's been done almost in secret.

Word is that the preview for the movie will be released tomorrow, 17 January 2024.

I'm now convinced that we're living in a simulation.
