re: While we're all waiting for Winds of Winter. This is what George RR Martin is doing.

GRRM turned his readers into one of his characters. We got killed prematurely and never got to finish the rest of the story. Such is life, I guess.

1. I had forgotten all about it until I saw this thread,
B. If he hasn't wrapped everything up during a year-long shutdown, it isn't getting done by him or during his lifetime, and
III. After that last couple of seasons of the show, I would really have to muster up the strength to give a single shite, if the truth be known.

Now that Roy Dotrice is dead, the audiobooks will not be listenable as well. Some didn’t like Roy’s narration, but i thought he did an excellent job for as many voices as he had to try to create. It feels nice not to give a crap anymore.

The only objection to his reading I had was his voice/cadence for Tywin Lannister.
It had the same rhythm to it every time he spoke and didn’t seem to match the character.

Personally, I feel like GRRM is an average writer. He should sub out the writing to talented people while controlling the narrative. George would be able to cover many sub-stories before he dies. I can tell he struggles with procrastination.

Average or not, he’s certainly an expert world creator. Some of the histories he has written (to avoid working on completing the series), are incredible. Not just Westeros, he’s thought through the history of the entire world.

I'm not even really a massive ASOIAF fan - but in terms of history / worldbuilding he is up there with some of the other masters such as Robert Jordan, Stephen Erikson, Sanderson although I have trouble saying anyone is at Tolkein's level, he lived for the worldbuilding and the books were kind of just secondary.
He also excels at giving every one of his characters a lot of depth it seems like fulfilling the "everyone is the hero of their own story" kind of goal.
In terms of plot structure, I think he suffers a bit from his style as not being a big outliner while trying to tell this massive story. It definitely meanders in places - which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you love the world and want to get as many possible words in there. The actual guts of the wide ranging stories are obviously very well done thus far (it is hard not to consider how everything has yet to tie up and sort of knock him for an ending that I assume won't feel as organic as much of the story - lots and lots of discovery writers have this problem).
And his prose is about average for the genre I would say. Overall, I would say he is definitely above average given the books he has put out, although not finishing the fricking story definitely will knock you down a few pegs.

I agree he has a broad range of talent that is nearly spot on for the genre.
What he doesn't have:
1. A work ethic. He's busted his arse NOT to finish the ASOIAF novels. This is an anomaly for speculative fiction/fantasy writers. While not all crank out work at the speed of, say, Piers Anthony, and Martin's "novels" are hefty to say the least, if he had wanted to finish and made that a legitimate goal, he'd be free, without pressure to do all the ancillary, satellite, prequel/sequel shite to ASOIAF he wanted. He'd be a hero to his fans for finishing what must now be considered "the unfinishable".
2. Focus - may be related to 1. above, but the writing meanders - quite a bit. All of the dense, name dropping, history building for largely irrelevant characters may be impressive from a depth standpoint, but it isn't storytelling. It's just typing/lumbering through a narrative for the typing/lumbering's sake.
3. Objectivity - His politics leak into his writing too conspicuously. I don't mean partisanship, I mean his relatively radical feminism. And, because he doesn't really understand women, this drive for feminist themes without full understanding causes some of his challenges in writing for his lead female characters. I think this also slows him down/leads him into these writer's blocks/"Meereenese knots" as they may end up being known.

Martin's plate is currently very full with "a zillion" other things beyond The Winds of Winter, he said. "My plate is full to overflowing. Every time I wrap up one thing, three more things land on me. Monkeys on my back, aye, aye, I've sung that song before. So many monkeys. And Kong," he said.
That fat turd hasn’t worked for more than an hour a day since 2011.

Screw this twat nozzle - just throw the fans that made you filthy rich under the bus because your fricking clueless.

The Game of Thrones franchise is dead. George's laziness killed the books and TV show. It's time to move on.

This. In the last year plus a little I’ve done wheel of time and started mistborn and expanse. Lots of other good shite out there, giving up on thrones but it is what got me into the genre. If Winds is ever release I’ll gladly pick it up, there’s no way dream of spring ever sees daylight.

Here's a thought George:
Stop being a celebrity. Stop working on other things. Stop traveling 10 months out of they year where you admit you don't write a lick.
Be an author and work on the thing, daily, that got you where you are. Get the books done. You are not young.
Or, alternatively, just admit you are rich now and enjoying what is left of life, and that the books really aren't something you are interested in finishing.

I know that's part of it.
But I really think the passion has been gone a long time. It has become an obligation, and so many other things are out there to bring him joy.
