Impressed with CGI in that trailer, they did a good job showing the one power in action, which was one of my concerns. The myrddraal in particular looked awesome.

Just saw it for the first time, some mixed reaction, I was hoping that the weaves would look more intricate but a lot of good stuff in the trailer.
They are definitely going for their own feel and not trying to imitate GOT - I just hope it doesn't come off as too campy to capture general public attention

So far so good.
I was a bit disappointed by the myrddraal . They are the "eyeless", not the nose-less, forehead-less, lamprey-mouthed grub-heads. At least, in my mind.
And let's hope the hinted "girl-power" trope isn't over-played.

At this point I dont see how anyone can argue with a straight face that the "girl power" thing isnt real. I understand they are hiding some things in the trailer that will play out over the course of the season, but its pretty clear that Egwene is going to be presented as a co-lead with Rand/Mat at the very least, and obviously Moiraine is going to be pushed as the focal star early on.
Show can still work well in spite of this, but people should probably make their peace with it.

It could also be set up that way initially, only to have the brittle facade of aes sedai worldly control come crumbling down, as it frankly did in the books, with individual aes sedai and the white tower as a whole getting force fed humble-pie repeatedly, with varied degrees of individual acceptance.
None shed their presumed authority and high-airs as completely as Morraine necessarily did, while others refused to see their folly up their often-satisfying end.
The struggle to cope with that knowledge in the face of the last battle contributed greatly to the character development of several of the main characters.
but I suspect such moments of growth won't be required in the retelling.

I actualy liked the myrddraal vibe, something about the coloring just doesn't come off as natural to me on a lot of the costumes. I think I'll get used to it but im more worried about it appealing to the masses so we get a full series.
I'll need to see how it's all woven together overall, but some of the fight scenes (jumping axe guy), the aes sedai costume coloring got me slightly worried on what tone the story will hit and if that will appeal to a widespread audience.
As far as the girl power trope I wouldn't worry about it because a lot of that is in the books and is logical with the world created. The people in power that we see early on are almost all women. Egwene is going to get played up early because she will be taking over as lead women after the shite goes down outside Cairhein I think. Plus she has one of the best overall arcs in the series and is comparable to Rand.
They are clearly playing up Logain,with Rand, Mat, Perrin and Lan that will be a pretty balanced in terms of main character screen time.

me too. first, is there a color called "aes sedai blue"? or "aes sedai red? In the same way there is a "LSU purple" or "dewalt yellow"? Why are all of the aes sedai of the same ajah wearing the exact same shade of their color?

I was hoping that they may do the colored dresses in the white tower or in formal events. The whole color scheme is somewhat jarring, I think it will be fine once we get used to it and see it all as a finished product but all of the colors seemed to have a really bright contrast.

They are clearly going for a very bright color palate and brightly lit look at the start of the series. Things can get more drab as the series goes on the DO’s influence falls over the world.
But yeah they are definitely going opposite of GoT and want to be very colorful.

I think the color is a good choice to make it stand out as something different. Lots of mixed feelings about the trailer, but I am excited to watch the series. I guess that means it accomplished its goal though.

Sanderson just did a live stream.
He mentioned that there are changes that he thinks are akin to LOTR (Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire), and reiterated that to think of it as another turning of the wheel, and some total book purists might be negative like the LOTR are ones are, but it is totally necessary to adapt...
And was also extremely positive. Said they have done a great job and said one episode he read was a 10/10 in his opinion.

I think LOTR purists don't consider the changes minimal. The Scouring of the Shire change in particular made them foam at the mouth.
But yeah, there are some pretty large stylistic changes (clothing and the like) here that weren't there for LOTR.

FYI...Amazon might have a hit on their hands.
The trailer just in the US Youtube has 9.8M views in one week. The Tomorrow War trailer has 10M views in 3 months, for instance.
The first trailer for Coming 2 America topped out at 16M views total 8 months in.
We will see where it ends up by the time trailer 2 comes out, but that is a really good sign.
Internationally, it is getting a TON of views in India. Apparently has about 10M views which even with the amount of people they have is a lot for a Prime series there.

I watched most of that as well. It's a good sign that Sanderson is happy with what he has read/seen so far. Amazon was smart to have Sanderson and Harriet (Jordan's editor/wife) as producers on the show. Also the fact they are already in production of season 2; Amazon must be pretty confident.
I've seen other videos where Sanderson has said that Rafe (WoT showrunner) has made interesting choices that he wouldn't have made but also says TV is such a different medium.
Yeah, I'm sure alot of book people will be unhappy with some of the changes but you have to expect it. The 3 books for Lord of the Rings had less than 600k words and had major changes. The first 2 books of WoT have almost that many words alone. Total word count for WoT is 4.4 million... so yeah things will be cut and streamlined.
The only thing that I was disappointed with in the trailer was the weaving. The books make a big deal about how intricate it is to weave especially when combining different types of threads (fire, water, earth, spirit). Right now it looks generic just white/grey stuff. I'm hoping as the seasons progress the weaving vfx gets alot better.
With Lord of the Rings, magic use in the story was very limited where it's in use constantly in Wheel of Time. They need to have that vfx nailed down for Dumai's Wells or I'll be mad.

The more I think about it, the more I've decided to just not worry about changes and nitpick. It is going to be very different with characters / storylines merged, locations changed, relationships and antagonists morphed to fit a more modern look at the narrative.
It appears they are committed to putting forth a high quality show with respected and experienced names throughout the production staff, several strong actors (Rosamund Pike is very underrated IMO) and are making lots of effort to respect Jordan and the story. Bringing in Sanderson and Sarah Nakamura (she is like the uber WoT nerd expert if you haven't heard from here and is there to answer questions about the text, show actors and production team relevant parts of the text.
Overall, I've been pretty confident that they would deliver a high quality product throughout the last two years. Although I have some slight reservations about the trailer (mainly associated with the need to appeal to a broad audience), it certainly appears that the show will feel like the wheel of time.
As long as it hits the right tone, doesn't fundamentally change the main characters motivations or make pointless and unnecessary changes I'm going to be really excited even though it will certainly be a very different version of the Wheel of Time story.

Season 1 is going to be vastly different, I actually think this show will get closer to the storylines after the first few seasons when they have finished fleshing out Logain and setting up some of the stuff from the books.

It was Sanderson from that interview Fun Bunch quoted. The first season of GOT was super close to the books, so I'm hoping he just means in comparison to that season, because the later seasons were way off.
Hopefully it's more like the first season of altered carbon and the Witcher so far, where there are changes, but it doesn't detract too much from the overall story.
If it's like the second season of altered carbon where they change a ton and it makes the plot suffer, then you wind up with a canceled show.
