I’ve been toying with the idea recently of starting to read some of the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan books. Should I? If so, where should I start? Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

They were great.

I’d start at the beginning with Hunt For Red October and go from there

Red Storm Rising

Great novel. But to be clear, this was not a Jack Ryan book.

1. Red Storm Rising (not Jack Ryan but the best)
2. Hunt For Red October
3. Without Remorse

Love Tom Clancy novels. He's one of the few authors that I've reread books multiple times. I'd recommend publication order. Though you don't have to do that except for Debt of Honor and Executive Orders which should be read in order.

I haven't read all of the his co-authored books but they are on my list. Also read Red Storm Rising which is fantastic and Rainbow Six.

Everything up to Bear and the Dragon is great. It starts to slide rapidly after though, and outright jumps the shark a few books into the Jack Ryan Jr series. They have their moments, mostly carried by the emotional connection to characters to the original but the story, plot, and delivery leaves much to be desired.

Also suffers from continually raising states. They threaten ww3 every six months into Jack Ryan’s apparent 10 year term as president, ping ponging between Chinese and Russian boogie men.

I guess but he and Jack got to know each other later so you could call a prequel.

Correct. Without Remorse was a prequel and RSR wasn't part of the Ryanverse.

Otherwise read them in order so you don't have spoilers.

It’s Clark’s back story.

I prefer to go by release order vs chronological because there are inconsistencies sometimes with prequels and well, that’s how you had to read them when they were new.

For the Jack Ryan books:

The Hunt for Red October
Patriot Games
Cardinal of the Kremlin
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum of All Fears
Debt of Honor
Executive Orders
The Bear and the Dragon
Red Rabbit

Executive Orders is where I stopped. Cardinal of the Kremlin is my personal favorite, a great spy novel, great pacing. Hunt for Red October and Clear and Present Danger next both far more detailed than the movies.
Clear and Present Danger is where he started to get way more complex and Debt of Honor was the “jump the shark” book for me. Still entertaining but not nearly as good as the early stuff

They are a bit dated now, but still a good read. A bit like reading John le Carre 25 years later.

Do read them in order.

Should not be mentioned in the same breath as the original Jack Ryan books.

I think Patriot Games was first. Jack was a professor at Annapolis at the beginning and it's how he became a spook.

Definitely the crown jewel of Clancy's career.

He straight up said that he was going by release order, not chronological

Frankly (and I read them through Executive Orders), these are the best and the only with real long-term value/re-readability. Cardinal, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger were all fun. Sum of All Fears had its moments, but I felt he was running out of things to say. Debt of Honor and Executive Orders were slogs (overall, they did have their moments as well).

Red Storm is the best - I basically read that over a long weekend in undergrad, in 4 or 5 sittings. A page turner with my highest recommendation for a standalone novel.

This needs to be a true-to-book miniseries in the worst way.
