The Rage of Dragons (The Burning Book 1) - by Evan Winter
I just finished this book and for fantasy fans I highly recommend it. It has shades of Peter Brett's Demon Cycle series as well as Anthony Ryan's Raven's Shadow Series.

From the publisher:

quote:

The Omehi people have been fighting an unwinnable war for almost two hundred years. The lucky ones are born gifted. One in every two thousand women has the power to call down dragons. One in every hundred men is able to magically transform himself into a bigger, stronger, faster killing machine.

Everyone else is fodder, destined to fight and die in the endless war.

Young, gift-less Tau knows all this, but he has a plan of escape. He's going to get himself injured, get out early, and settle down to marriage, children, and land. Only, he doesn't get the chance.

Those closest to him are brutally murdered, and his grief swiftly turns to anger. Fixated on revenge, Tau dedicates himself to an unthinkable path. He'll become the greatest swordsman to ever live, a man willing to die a hundred thousand times for the chance to kill the three who betrayed him.

quote:

A refreshingly brutal and imaginative tale of survival and revenge. Evan Winter's battles are visceral, bloody masterpieces, and Tau's climb from exiled Lesser to legendary warrior is earned in a way few writers could hope to match." David Dalglish, author of the Shadowdance Series

quote:

"Expertly structured with a keen eye for action and character, The Rage of Dragons is a captivating epic heroic fantasy from a major new talent." Anthony Ryan, author of Blood Song

Book 2 is scheduled to release in November.

I really enjoyed it as well. Cant wait for the second one. I thought the action was written extremely well.

Here is an interview with the author.

Will check it out. I always seem to be late to the book series parties, so count me in on a early entry.

The way he wrote Tau as he gained skill and reputation was really great. I'll post a bookmarked passage I loved:

***Doesn't spoil anything, but is a direct quote***

quote:

These Indlovu had never fought Scale Jayyed. They might have laughed off the stories, mocking their Noble brothers who had fallen to him. They might have told one another it would be different when they faced such Common scum. They might have laughed then, in the comfort and safety of the Indlovu Citadel, but they were in the melee, Tau was among them, and there was only pain.

So badass.

Right. I also liked how he trained that was a different concept which worked well for the world created. I'm neck deep in 2 other series now, but want to re-read this one before Fires is released.

I am halfway through this book now. It's incredible. Thank you for the recommendation. Kind of like a more hardcore version of Red Rising.

Excellent book. This and Ken Follet's book jump started me back to reading.
