What a ride. First 8 or so books were incredible... Kind of lagged in the middle but the end books have picked up again.

What comparable series do you recommend? Here are some other series I have thoroughly enjoyed:

1. Game of Thrones
2. LOTR
3. Red Rising
4. Mistborn

Congratulations. We should all get a merit badge for finishing that series.

Ugh...just finished book 1 of WOT and that seems so far away. It was good - though I hear (and hope) that 2-6 or so is better). Taking a break though as I won't be able to go straight through that many books in a row.

Did you read the Wax and Wayne trilogy in the Mistborn universe? I'm reading it now and as much as I loved the first 3 this trilogy is better

Malazan Book of the Fallen is always my first recommendation for people who are into fantasy series.

At least you tried - maybe, one more shot, just jump in and read Book 2. If you don't like that one you won't like any of it.

If you are looking at something comparable to WOT in terms of overall scope of world building and high magic fantasy, as Sally said Erikson's Malazan series would be your best bet. But it's very much a love it or hate it series for most. I would suggest starting with the second book in the series (you won't spoil anything from book 1 except that 3 characters live into the second book, and the first book can be very awkward to get into). If you like book 2 go back and read #1 before heading to #3. Book 2 is one of the best books in the series, so if you don't like that one then Malazan is not for you.

I'd also recommend The faithful and the fallen series by Jon Gwynne, it's also somewhat similar in style.

Michael J Sullivan's Riyria books are also excellent.

If you are looking for something more gritty and lower magic then Joe Abercrombie's First Law series and other books in the same world as mentioned are excellent too.

Cotton, if you haven't read him yet, you might want to give Mark Lawrence a try(starting with his Broken Empire series). He's very similar to Abercrombie in many ways.

Ya, I haven't found much comparable world-building series with the same scope. Is The Faithful and The Fallen similar to those two - haven't read that one.

Have also considered digging in to some of Sanderson's work, but haven't gotten around to it. I haven't been reading enough lately, need to get back into the swing.

I suffered through all of book one and about 200 pages of book 2.

Erickson is talented and his writing is beautiful but he's boring as frick to me.

I'll check it out.

Have you read Elantris? If so, what did you think?

The Demon Cycle Series by Peter V. Brett.

I'm on the last book now and it has been outstanding.

The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson has been outstanding but it is a long way from finished.

You would probably like the gentlemen bastard series.

The Lies of Locke Lamora.

I really really Liked Lies of Locke Lamora (Btw that might be the best title ever) but I couldn't get into the second book. That first one is one of my favorites and I feel it stands on it's own well.

You were almost there, I think the story picks up just a bit after that once you get to know the characters. Some time down the road when you search for something to read, pick up book 2 again and give it a shot.

Reading it directly after book 1 is tough as well. He is one author I actually don't recommend reading in a row. Its too tough of a hall, certainly not easy to burn through pages like a lot of other fantasy. Certainly take breaks after each "section" of the overall series and some stand-alone books.
