The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

Eh...I'm one of the most outspoken libertarians on this board. I've read everything Ayn Rand has written. Murray Rothbard is my god. Hayek is my savior.

...and Goodkind went off the goddamn rails after the first few books in the Sword of Truth series. And ruined the whole thing with his pseudo-Randian rants.

I've just started the Kingkiller chronicles today. About 200 pages in it and I love it.

The Three Body Problem and both of its sequals.

I am 70% through the final book, "Deaths End", and I can honestly say its the best series i've ever read.

Its Definitely tough at first and is what im coming to understand is "Hard Sci fy" but it grabs you really quickly.

I really cant describe it other than its the most imaginative look at the genre ive ever seen.

I really enjoyed those. I hope he finishes. Supposedly Sam Raimi is adapting Name of the Wind as a feature film and Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton is producing a prequel series for Showtime.

Have you read Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series? The story continues in The Aspect-Emperor . . . quartet? quadrology? It's not gritty, it's downright grim but the worldbuilding blows away Martin and maybe tops Tolkien. Then add in some really provocative philisophical themes that are central to the story. (Is it possible to be the prime mover of your own thoughts? And if that awareness were achieved, would you still be human?) I still can't really say whether I enjoyed it, but it is thought provoking in a longterm way.

I haven't. We've been harvesting corn and beans so I've been listening to my books lately. Currently listening to Sanderson's Way Of Kings. I'm digging the story but not a super fan of the narration.

Oh come on, it's not even in the same planet as Tolkien. I mean, it's just basically a fantasy version of the Crusades for the most part, outside of the magic system. It's definitely better than Martin, but Martin's worldbuilding is nothing special in ASOIAF anyway.

That being said, the first trilogy is very solid. The sheer amount of author wanking on page is a bit much at times, but Kellhus is definitely one of the more interesting and unique main characters in fantasy.

In the second series the author wanking on page goes off the charts, and I haven't bothered to read the last two books of the quartet. I was pretty bored with the second series before I stopped. It wasn't terrible, but not very good either.

Except for the Non-men and the ancient spacecraft.

I thought Achamian was just as memorable. All of the Mandate Schoolmen really. All half crazy from the ritual curse of the nightmares of the first apocalypse and mocked and derided throughout the world but the gnosis made them vastly more powerful than the other sorcerous schools.I

Do you know how it ends? The ending is worth taking it back up.

Yeah, I almost put but with aliens, and should have.

It's not anywhere close to Erikson's worldbuilding though, much less Tolkien.

And yeah, Akka is a great character, pretty much the only truly likable character in the series. Be he's not really all that different from Thomas Covenant in many ways, and I've read many other similar fantasy characters. Kellhus is like no other main character I can think of, even though he's pretty much totally unlikeable in the follow series.

I've managed to avoid spoilers for the ending so far. I imagine I'll break down and read the last two books eventually, just have quite a large amount of books on my to read list that I'm much more interested in reading.

The long wait for the third book in the quartet kinda killed any marginal interest I had in the series. The twisted homage to Moria in The Judging Eye was fantastic, but I found the rest of the book pretty mediocre. And I found the second book pretty boring outside of the batshit crazy younger son parts.
