Era two had better character chemistry and dialogue while era 1 had the better overall story, just my opinion. Words of Radiance and Oathbringer are top tier books I’ve ever read along with the fat mans Storm of Swords and Erikson Memories of Ice.

Where do you rank Era 2?

I enjoy it as a reader much more than Era 1, and I'm sure I will be in the minority.

I don't think its close really. Sanderson is an infinitely better writer than he was.

The story arc of Era 1 is much much better, and there is a reason for that: he wrote them as one and had it mapped out. He never even intended to write Era 2, he wrote a story with Wax and Wayne as a writing exercise never intended for publication, but liked the characters and world too much. Its basically a bridge Era to Era 3 which will likely have a more cohesive arc and be more "epic".

So the story of Era 2 isn't anywhere close to Era 1, era 1's is much better. But the writing and characters are light years ahead of 1.

I tried to re-read era 1 recently and couldn't.

This is where I am comparing the two really. Though ai enjoyed the first Mistborn trilogy, I've never had an urge to reread that series due to the average writing and mostly poor characters.

I haven’t had this much fun reading a book in a long time. Maybe ever. Sanderson is brilliant.

Stormlight is phenomenal. I’m liking more than any of the other books.

Yep I got my Kindle edition this morning.

I’m going to finish the Stormlight Archive before I start on it. At least the first book

I’ve been waiting for book 5 to be released before starting stormlight as I understand there is a long multi year break before phase 2 starts. 2024 would be perfect… can’t wait to get started:

I wasn't a huge fan of the first 3 Mistborn books. Concept was great, but something just sort of.. YA or juvenile or something about the writing. Decided to start the second era yesterday and plowed through Alloy of Law in the last 24 hours. Characters and dialog are pretty improved from Era 1. Wayne does really remind me of Alfie Solomons in a lot of his first dialog, though he develops his own unique persona as it goes on.

I have 4 credits on Audible. What 4 books should I start with, chronologically speaking ? I have read certainly hundreds of books, but never anything from Sanderson.

Im on my third read thru of the ASoIaF, mainly because I am loathe to waste my time on a book that doesnt end up being worth a shite, but jesus, this is starting to feel unhealthy.

I'd say read Mistborn first because its his first trilogy. You can appreciate it better. He definitely evolved as a writer as he continued, so its better to start with his earlier works and progress with him than it would be to try and read his better written later works and then go backwards.

I also feel you get a very good grasp on how the magic and forces in his worlds work when reading Mistborn and it makes it easier to imagine and understand the rules in his later works.

So start with Mistborn.

Mistborn era 1 (Mistborn the final empire, Well of ascension and hero of ages) then either elantris and Warbreaker or can do first 3 books of Mistborn era 2. I would wait on book 4 of era 2 The Lost Metal until you’ve gone deeper into the cosmere.

My first recommendations for those new to Cosmere is Mistborn. It's the best entry point imo. Way of Kings is certainly a better book, but it's definitely requires quite a bit of investment.

The first three Mistborn books are certainly not his best writing, he has evolved greatly.

But you definitely should start there.

I just finished the first Mistborn novel and really liked it. It's kind of a slow burn but the payoff is pretty good.

Alot of his books (especially Stormlight) end in a massive climax which the community has dubbed the "Sanderlanche".
