I rarely if ever audibly snicker when I read books, but it happened at least 8 or 9 times during this one.

What struck me most about this book was that for how funny and ridiculous it is, it’s actually got a pretty sophisticated thematic underpinning.

Ignatius Reilly is the original neckbeard

I remember my first time reading this and when he told the hotdog vender that the hot dogs will be free I remember loudly guffawing. The writing in that scene was perfection. It gets me every time I read it, which has been a while now. Guess I need to dust off my copy at some point soon.

There have been several recent threads about it, because almost all of the humor still works. I'll grant that the gay party scene seems weird now, but that's about it.

Trying to Create a gay political party to get world peace was such a brilliant episode of the novel

It also dawned upon me that TulaneLSU is Ignatius. Lol.

My favorite novel. I saw a play of the book done by Swine Palace in the 90s Pretty sure Spud McConnell played Ignatius in the production.

If your from New Orleans, you'll recognize immediately how genius Toole portrayal of old school New Orleans folks was. My first time reading the book, it was like "Holy shite, that's my mom and grandma."

Which is ironic since TulaneLSU hates that book.

All of his interactions with the hot dog vendor were gold. The part about how sexual desire and hunger originate in the same part of the brain, so it only makes sense for there to be armed hot dog robberies if there were armed rapes had me rolling.

It does an amazing job capturing the accents of New Orleans. An amazing book.
