If this happens, I imagine they'll do what Robert Jordan did and find another author to finish it.

Jordan had tons of notes, had the final scenes written out and had explicitly stated he wanted to have someone finish the series for his fans.

HBO has already written an ending, if anything I could see them maybe getting someone to come and just write a book version of the HBO series ending, including some of the storylines that didn't get mentioned. But Martin also hasn't really stated that he feels obligated to do that for his fans.

Personally, I always felt Martin / ASOIAF got crowned way too early and its nice to see some more reasonable and accurate reviews starting to take place.

Martin has flat out said it is in his will and estate that no one can finish it but him. If he dies, the series is over.

Yep. Wants all his notes and outlines burned if he dies.

I just don’t understand it. One of the nicest things someone can do for you is to actually give a shite about your art. So many writers and artists die in anonymity, so while I understand his fans can be rude to him about finishing these books, there should be some sense of obligation between a writer and his audience which ole Martin just doesn’t seem to possess.

I question if these even exist - seems like he just doesn't know what the hell to do with his story

I figure in 10 years he’s had to have put something to the paper for the actual end game, and hopefully not what we saw in the TV series.

To your earlier point:

Definitely find myself agreeing with this as more time passes. While the high points of 4&5 were really well done, the books definitely don’t live up to the bar set by the first 3 in the series.

6 is positioned to be the best one of the bunch though so we’ll see if he can actually earn his crown.

Wow, that's just insane. Hopefully he stays alive to at least finish book 6.

Patrick Rothfuss says "Hey"

99% he gives no fricks and has no intention of finishing his trilogy at all. He cashed out probably eight years ago.

It’s been 10 years since I read the books, IIRC the last book felt like he was treading water for a good portion of it. I don’t think he knows how he wants to get to his ending.

The worst thing about the last book is the tonal shift in some of the characters. Basically so much time changed either Martin himself or his perception of the characters and as a result their perspectives aren’t fully congruent with earlier entries.

Doors of Stone is looking like an August 2020 release

Did some digging and there does not appear to be any truth whatsoever to this.

Just amazon filling in a date which they do from time to time, with no information.

I honestly don't ever expect this book as long as Trump is President.

He's said it. The election fricked his world up.

He couldn't write for months (or possibly even a year or two if you listen to some) after the election.

The election was 2016.

The second book in the trilogy was released in 2010. That’s a good 6 years worth of writing on a trilogy allegedly comp, etc, at least major plotting and scene wise.

I call bullshite.

The derangement was so powerful that it went 6 years in the past.

A Storm of Swords was a masterpiece but the series is unfinished. The authors of the Expanse series used to work for Martin up until Storm of Swords. I think they ghost wrote most of the first three books. Martin had the outline but was completely lost when they left to do their own thing.

Prove me wrong.

I mean what do you want me to say? Rothfuss said that it set him back greatly.

Well for one, Daniel Abraham never worked for Martin, only Ty Franck did. And Martin was writing good books before Franck was old enough to be in middle school. The expanse novels didn't come out until A Dance with Dragons was already complete as well, so Franck was there for all the novels, he'd be responsible for the awesome and the average in your scenario.

plus if it was due to "ghost writers" GRRM probably would have just hired some more
