I am almost finished with book one and have never seen the series. For anyone that has both read and watched, does the television series stay in line with the books? Which one is better? Should I watch it? Thank you and no spoilers please.

The first few seasons stay pretty in line. Some characters are condensed.
Yes you should watch it. It's one of the best series out there.

Definitely read through book 3.
Storm of swords is one of my favorite books . It’s great.
It’s where I stopped and I’m content with that as far as the books go

Books are better but unfinished and based on the author’s age/tendency to not write, it will probably remain unfinished. The show was amazing until about season 6 when they ran out of source material. The last season took what was a GOAT show to something that isn’t talked about anymore which sucks. I refuse to believe the books will end like the show did. That said 3rd book might be best cover to cover book I’ve read. 4 is much much better on rereads and is the weakest of the first 5. I’d read series then watch the show, by then some of the stuff HBO is working on might have got interest back in the series.

Ya books through 3 at least - maybe 4 but may want to wait on the rest to see it he actually finishes the series by some miracle. Show is fantastic through like season 4. Starts showing cracks in 5 and 6 but still overall solid and has some legit redeeming episodes.
Seasond 7 and 8 are embarassing and dont really need to be watched

Ok thanks guys. I will continue with the reading then watch a few seasons. So far with book one I think the Imp might be my favorite character. Hope he doesn’t die in the last few pages. Thanks again.

I'm going to slightly disagree with others here. IF you like books 1-3, I suggest you read 4 and 5 as well. While they weren't as good as the first 3, I still really enjoyed them. In fact, my enjoyment of those books probably grew more on my reread than the growth of my enjoyment in 1-3. I still have not found a series that I became engrossed with as much as AGOT. It hurts that the books will likely never be finished, but it was still some of my most enjoyable reading.

The books a great but wordy. Could be about 20% shorter each if we didn’t have a detailed description of how everyone’s eggs are cooked at breakfast. The cool thing about the books is the little details throughout. It’s very impressive how little hints and nods are hidden throughout.

That's what makes the reread so enjoyable. You pick up on so much more. I've mentioned this on the book board before, but I didn't really know who Stannis was when they start off Clash of Kings from the POV of someone in his household. I figured they were just introducing a new character. Then, when I reread AGOT, I realized they mentioned Stannis like 200 times. It just never clicked in my head the first time because of the sheer volume of names.

Same here, watching explanatory YouTube videos helps a lot too

Lucky.
Stick with the books. It might take 10 years for the final book to publish, but the series is not worth it.

I agree with everything DT just posted.
Reed book 1. Then watch season !
Read book @. Watch season 2.
Read book 3. Watch season 3.
Then read book 4 and 5. Watch for book 6. Hope for book 7. Don't watch the show past this point.

Book 3 was the most fun I’ve ever had reading a book as an adult. There is a huge chunk of the book where every chapter is basically better than the one before it. It’s so far and away the high point of the IP to me.

I watched the first 2 episodes when the series premiered on HBO then I started reading the books because I couldn't wait a week to find out what happened next.
Loved the first few seasons of the series but the books were way better. I suggest finishing the first 3 books before watching season 3; I believe it would make the 3rd season that much more interesting as you understand the depth of the characters better and the direction of the story.
I finished books 4 and 5 before season 4 started. Book 4 is less linear and no way the series can capture where the story goes and do it justice. I barely watched the series after 3 maybe seeing 1 or 2 episodes in season 4 and the last 2 episodes of season 5. I totally cut myself off from GoT after season 5 only swerving into reviews of those seasons and fans dissappointment without spoiling where it could all end... only if the books will be finished.
